Please insert CD1
Thought I'd start a replay of GK3, but the Steam version greets me with a screen saying "Please insert CD1" from which I can't get anywhere. :steamsad:

The OS on this PC is Windows 10, 64-bit.

Any ideas?

edit: Problem was solved by creating a virtual optical drive with Daemon Tools or similar software.

I'm running on windows 10 without an issue. I'd say try re-install as it's not very big or maybe relocate your steam libarary folder. I keep mine out of c:\program files(x86) so maybe that helps or hurts.

Same, please insert CD 1, someone didn't edit a config file to point to an alternate locaiton.

Tried revalidating the files and then uninstalling and reinstalling the game. No effect.

My Steam folder is also kept out of Program Files, it's simply C:\Steam.

But eh, I can't be bothered to troubleshoot this any further. This is my 3rd copy of the game anyway (I've got the original discs as well as the GOG version), so I have ways to play it if I really want... I'd obviously get this refunded if I bought it on Steam but I got it with the Humble Bundle so that's a no-go, and I'm not too bothered by it.

Hopefully this gets noticed as a bug report. :)

I'm sure someone will fix it, it's probably a misconfigured registry itm. I tried and found a few spoth where executable are located, I'm going to probably uninstall and purge it from the registry and then reinstall and see what happens.

Dude i really am envious. Not about your bug tough. About the disc version. I was young and unaware when it was released and when i was aware of this awesome game, it already was about several euros to buy, much more than the original. Worst was Gabriel Knight 2. Just imagine it was about 300+€ for the disc version.
Sometimes i really wish the good old times were back.

The game is looking for an optical disc drive, which you don't have (like most modern computers). Installing virtual drive software like Daemon Tools tends to solve this specific problem with GK3. The developers were so lazy they just copied and pasted the same exact broken GOG version over to Steam. Way to go team... way to test the hell out of your games. Not embarrassing at all.

Thank you so much. Creating a virtual drive with Daemon Tools solved it.

Definitely a big oversight in 2016 and something that should've been fixed because, like you said, many PCs don't have optical drives anymore.

My advise: Don't use Daemon Tools (Crapware). Use WinCDEmu Portable, which is too much better and powerful. Give it a try. Mount any dummy iso and it'll work.

Also, google GK3Launcher (Sourceforce) and dgVoodoo2 Wrapper (Dege's Stuffs). Combination of both will bring you 1080 16:9 resolution and 8xAA!!

oooh, that makes so much sense. Wow, there's probably a really simple line to atler to fix this.

Haven't got the problem but I alredy have a virtual drive on the computer so it might be why it didn't happen.

Thanks, the ISO mounting fixed this problem for me too. This is SO ANNOYING.

you don't have to mount the iso, just to have an optical drive or a virtual drive, but it can be empty.

GOG actually has a replacement exe file available that is supposed to fix this issue. I can't test right now whether this works with the Steam version, but if you want to give it a go: http://files.gog.com/support/GK3.zip

It was posted in https://www.gog.com/forum/gabriel_knight_series/gk3_wants_me_please_insert_cd1/post37

I can't check because I have Deamon Tools installed for other things (some emulators) but I guess it should work as both versions are probably the same.

But the game still work fine for me, with this new .exe file.
