Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within

Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within

Steam Version English Subtitles
I found that this game had problems with the instructions written here from another community post and presumed these were instructions for the wrong version of the game.

If you have the STEAM version (not the GOG Version or physical Version) download this exe
https://www.oldgames.sk/en/game/gabriel-knight-2-the-beast-within/download/4739/
Navigate the installation to the Steam directory's GK2 Folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common), hit NO for the dosbox part.

And that's it! No messing about with the config files and no swapping files from one directory to another.

Now if someone could figure out how to use the upscaled versions of the videos and somehow change the entirety of dosbox to work in 1080p similarly that would be great. :steamhappy:

The patch works, but it bugs your existing saves. Luckily I wasn't too far into the game before discovering this. New buyers, be sure to install this patch first.

One weird thing about the patch: as you can see from the screenshot, it changes the chapter cutscene titles to a foreign language (Spanish?) but the rest of the subtitles work just fine.

Sorry to hear that, yes I noticed there were things that the creator of the patch got lazy with, if I had the time and experience I would definitely fix these complaints others had myself but unfortunately I don't know much about Dosbox or what I would need to even modify such things. But as far as subtitles go, this seemed the most user friendly option at the time.

Thank you for sharing this, it gave me the possibility to play and enjoy the game. Thanks again.
Btw, it's unacceptable that in 2022 this version is sold without official subtitles...

No problem man, I think the issue lies with the developers not remaking the game with proper subtitles... they clearly have the means to remaster it in Full HD and to be honest DosBos is a rather old fashioned loop around for old games. I appreciate the effort the actors and developers made to create the game back in the day, but this is simply not the case when it comes to getting bare bone basic functionality. I myself am surprised that this has been left in the state it has been as if it was mere abandonware. Unfortunately, I do not develop video games and I am sad to see a game that could be potentially played by the GameGrumps being left this way.

I imagine emailing the developers would be the best way forward... although I have always wondered if it is a case of mere modifying that would improve this game's quality better I have seen HD uploads of the videos so I know this could definitely be done. Maybe I could look into game modding and find out for myself.

Hi guys,
I downloaded the patch and followed instructions, but it doesn't work :(
Do I need to install the files in a specific folder?
I tried in some different ways, but no subtitles at all...
Can someone help me please? :)

so this game doesn't have english subtitles?

Any idea if the gog version has been fixed up compared to the Steam version? Steam versions tend to be more broken, usually at least. Gog doesn't always fix old games anymore though

Okay let me just repeat myself: Navigate the installation to the Steam directory's GK2 Folder, hit NO for the dosbox part.

The Gabriel Knight folder can only be in one possible location which is steamapps directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common) Locate your GK2 Folder and copy and paste the path using the folder navigation bar (above your folders) after double clicking some blank space on the bar... or just type it in manually. Shouldn't be too hard to find.
