Best Vegetables to Farm
What's the best bang for the buck plant in terms of consumable plant goods?...Are there really differences between plant types besides a. how fast they grow b. what they're used for c. what point they can be planted (ie late spring)?

It seems like potato (the initial crop you can get) is still the best even after getting new plants from expeditions.

Yeah i still find potato have the highest yield (better than pumpkins and cabbages) given the same size plot of land used. Had i knew that, i would have not spend so much time to go on expeditions.

I agree with both of you. Pumpkins sure do look nice in the screenshots though.

pumpkins aren't bad if you're doing mild climates. They aren't worth it for harsh. Cabbages are (sadly as they are the only actual period vegtable in the game) worthless.

Corn i anodd addition. Corn didnt enter Europe until the 16th century. It is a new world crop.
Ditto for peppers and tomatoes I do not think they are in the game.

With cabbage one thing to look out for that the default temperature for them to start growing is 14C. Since cabbage originated in Finland I have no idea why the devs set the temp so high.

In terms of the game's nutrition all vegetables are created equa (same vitamins and calories)l, but there are some differences between the various human edible (even if they need to be ground and baked) field crops in terms of how much they produce. Since all maps have the same precipitation I've taken out that info (plus stuff like what models they use), but this is the basic productivity info from the code:

Grow time is how many game time units it takes for them to grow. Resource count is how many of the item each plant produces. TemperatureMin is waht it sounds like (and is in C, so keep that in mind if you've switched to F in the game)
I thik growinfo is just human readable information on the corp.
Grow days is the number of game days it takes for a crop to mature (I think)
prodInYear is how much each field cell is likely to produce each year in a mild climate with good tending and nearby storage and well.
PerWorkerInYear is the likely max a worker working a field of this all year could produce.

Caloric value is a bit more complicated to calculate if you want to compare grains to veggies (unground grain in bread isn't worth much, four, i.e. ground grain, in pies is worth quite a bit more, or at least the net value of pies vs apparent value of components is greater.

I know this thread is old, but, has anything changed?

I was excited to get pumpkins, cabbage, corn. I had a bunch of crops set up to start growing corn... until I realized it was a grain for the mill. Cancel that.

Seems there is 0 point to different crops? Some should have a higher yield at least; growing potatoes includes leaves and stems, digging up dirt. Cabbage is easy to cultivate and harvest, so the yield should be higher. I would have been under the impression that corn would be a fast-growing food in the summer, but it's not even a food.

You also have to look at the Temp and Water ranges ;)

There is also a diference in productio/year "prodInYear " on chart (Actually the diference are stated and it does seem diverse in many ways between the Plants

Cabbage can be set to temperatureMin =0, in JFC utility, thats what I will do :) Thanks Nakia

If the produce is made into alchol at the Taverns or Inns, for a plus happiness :D
