oooh lack of hides
Did something happen, year 96 with 219 villagers plenty of all food stocks.
18 hunters and i cant get enough hides to make clothes! i tried putting hunting cabins further out but the hunters dont make it back to town due to distance they freeze to death. is there any other way to get hides?

Not without them changing the game or without modding. It's not hard to mod this, tho. If you unpack the CFG.PAK file or get Vinhay's Rebalance mod, look in the cfg folder and make a copy somewhere else then open the "animals.csv" in something like excel or google sheets. Go to column I (labled "resources"). That will show you want they drop when they they die. You can change the values, add meat or skins to animals that doen't have them (e.g. "meat|20,skin|4") . Make sure to save the file as a CSV file not an excel doc or something else.

thx cs, i would prefer not to run trainers to mod the game, i assume that as no one else has the issue it must be something i have done, i have deleted all saves and will start again.
i have a feeling that as i have terraformed all areas i have used and cleared all trees it could be the problem, maybe i will keep a forrested area spare just for hunting. as i was getting plenty of hides before i removed all the trees.

I think hide for 219 villagers cloth is not possible. For my 150 villagers I had around 25 hunters in the end to get just enough for wool coats for everyone. You can´t hunt in areas people cross all the time. I think terraforming is not the problem. I had one big forest between my villages but no animals in it. I think it was the people which prefented the animals to come back.

I modded my pigs to not only give me more meat but hides too.

To remedy the problem with having your hunters face hypothermia, add a hostel either in the center of your town or near (not too near) where your hunters are hunting. My hunters die at times, but I reduced the number of deaths by either having enough hostel/houses near the hunting area or by making sure that after I have all my laborers available, to assign the hunters first before anything else to prevent hunters from being dragged from homes far away from their hunting cabin. By assigning the laborers as hunters first before any other profession, the system itself will use the closest available laborer living in a home close to the hunting cabin.

You are right.Animals only spawn in forests. If you're playing a mountain map, don't flatten all the mountains unless you don't want vast forests. If you're playing a super flat map,a big half of your land needs to be forested areas to provide you enough hides.

You see, year 46 with 214 villagers and nearly 200 clothes stored.I got 12 foresters which means 6 forested areas(see the minimap),and I set the log limit to 200 so none of these forested areas will be deforested.
Also, the yellow areas on the minimap are plains, while the green are mountains. As this game is called FOREST village,I guess it's better not to play maps with no mountains.

I´m impressed but not really convinced in terms of balancing. I would like to expand the settlement on this map. Only 20% of the map is usable for settlement? The rest I need for hide!!!!

Forests for wood is not the problem because I can place forests for wood within my settlement. Producing coal balancing seems to be o.k. in my opinion in terms of wood. But hunting is not possible with all the people crossing through. You have to do it in the wilderness. And that´s too much space just for hide.

I do not want to built this dense on one part of the island having no chance to built smaller settlements on the rest of it at all. Nice to have a dense city, but it is also nice to have some villages around.

Yes I agree with you.But I guess that's because this map has nearly no mountains and this is a small map.I build 6 forester's lodges and set log limits because I don't want my foresters focus on one forested area, not because I need tons of wood.I would like to be able to trade for hides, otherwise we better play normal maps or maps with mountains.

You can´t go futher even on a big map. There is no possibility to prevent people from walking too far from home to get back in time. Villagers - especially builders and workers - sometimes walk through the whole settlement.

Besides the relation stays the same. Areas within the walking area of your villagers hunting is not profitable at all, even if you have forests in these areas. You still need too much wilderness around the settlement for hide on a big map to make balance fitting.

I think in the end trade will be possible. Besides barn animals surely will give hide also. Balancing just has not the biggest priority for the moment I imagine.

The idea with the limit for foresters is great. I did this in banished but I forgot about the possibility and the advantages in this game.

Agreed.Villagers randomly changing their houses is a big issue.Devs need to fix this.

True but I think land isn't an issue when playing a normal map.

Yes, a huge map really is huge. But forests within settlement really are not really profitable for hunting. Maybe I would change mind being able to built huge on huge maps.

It would be nice if some of the random placements at least put one in the center of the island. I understand their wanting to making fishing viable, but I'd be willing to give more central locations a chance since I think it would let one have more forested areas longer and would let you acces more of them while keeping things more compact. And often there is enough interior warter to meet at least initial fishing needs, anyway.

That's stupid. Even in Stronghold cows gave hides.
