i have a feeling that as i have terraformed all areas i have used and cleared all trees it could be the problem, maybe i will keep a forrested area spare just for hunting. as i was getting plenty of hides before i removed all the trees.

You see, year 46 with 214 villagers and nearly 200 clothes stored.I got 12 foresters which means 6 forested areas(see the minimap),and I set the log limit to 200 so none of these forested areas will be deforested.
Also, the yellow areas on the minimap are plains, while the green are mountains. As this game is called FOREST village,I guess it's better not to play maps with no mountains.
Forests for wood is not the problem because I can place forests for wood within my settlement. Producing coal balancing seems to be o.k. in my opinion in terms of wood. But hunting is not possible with all the people crossing through. You have to do it in the wilderness. And that´s too much space just for hide.
I do not want to built this dense on one part of the island having no chance to built smaller settlements on the rest of it at all. Nice to have a dense city, but it is also nice to have some villages around.
Besides the relation stays the same. Areas within the walking area of your villagers hunting is not profitable at all, even if you have forests in these areas. You still need too much wilderness around the settlement for hide on a big map to make balance fitting.
I think in the end trade will be possible. Besides barn animals surely will give hide also. Balancing just has not the biggest priority for the moment I imagine.
The idea with the limit for foresters is great. I did this in banished but I forgot about the possibility and the advantages in this game.
True but I think land isn't an issue when playing a normal map.
That's stupid. Even in Stronghold cows gave hides.
