Helpful ideas for planning and building your village.
I've learnt a lot of the mechanics of this game and they seem true to life.
Build satellite villages so they consist of all the main buildings including healer/school then add/fields/ small paddock pasture,, lumberjacks woodcutter kilner carpenter then make strong tools maker. Herbalist etc.
Planning,
Planning is not available in Forest Village so what I did /do is place all potential building/s and then just pause it. Later on when I get resources I just press play.
This way you can see your layout with a pause mark.

As our population grows it easier to monitor satellite villages , like in our real cities there is like villages everywhere out in the suburbs,no shops and they are round and have a cul-de-sac.
They all have a school and doctor near by. A cemetary / church but Forest Village doesnt have them so we must use pyres. Or a crypt.

The ware house and barn position is very important.
Don't build warehouses willy nilly as the stores go to the closest when it is one large village spread out.

Warehouses should be in like an industrial area with mines and animal farming.
Build a house for that area to provide workers otherwise it may attract workers from far away.
Here in lies a big key to the walking.
Build a school in each satellite village use stone paths to outer parts and other satellite villages. Use donkeys to route them.

A satellite village should start off with about 4 huts that are upgraded or 4 house and upgrade later or a guest house one only.
Remember when the game started that is like a satellite village you should aim for, just add in the buildings as the groups expand.
When old villages die they are replaced with new babies. So you can last a long time with a small satellite village as you expand to fields etc.

Now the storage.
The warehouse holds wood logs, raw Iron, Hay Stone, Clay, Oats.
The Barn holds many things so far I have> Firewood , Meat,Fruit, Vegies, Bread, Honey, Oats, eggs, clothes,Grain,Wool,Flour. Fish, wheat, herbs charcoal. Cast Iron, tools,. I may have missed some.
Now take into consideration that cows eat hay. stored in warehouse.
Sheep eat hay.stored in warehouse
Pigs eat Oats stored in Barns
Chickens eat oats.
Placement of the warehouse is not needed anywhere other than in that area of animal farming and mines.

Villagers educated will 60% or more work longer without breaks to eat or carry food home.

Those are the fundamental things to learn.
We can always move house by destruction and build new ones.

Edited:
At year 34 I finally tried cows pigs and goats as my hunter had supplied everything.
I build several hunter cabins and move the hunters around to each one, resting areas brings more wild animals.
Lots of trees brings in more wild animals leave stones iron etc.
Mods I used from start and couldn't be without, zoom out, wild goats as they give hunter wool. Cheaper stone roads, larger Barn capacity. Small shed invaluable.
Be care where you put it though as they get filled up with everything. Place only in villages near farms
Scarecrow. Wild Wheat flax and honey.
Fenceless farms.
Upgrading:
When upgrading a house note that all free villagers will gather the ingredients for that building, the builders just stand by and wait when there is free villagers. Based on that these villagers if uneducated will stop and go eat and gather food for home on a regular bases.
The problem here where do these free villagers live, if far away a lot of walking and then they may starve or die exposure to cold.
Point then is to educate as soon as possible and keep the homes in a cul-de-sac.
Do not upgrade or build if you have lots of roads. Build roads in small sections.
Priority doesn't work.

Saving.
Pause your game and lower the speed before saving.
I find this actually helps otherwsie when I load it it starts off full speed, this way it loads paused.
Will update over time.

Edited :
Sept. over 1000 villagers now but all dies soon after
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1180190382
cause of so many deaths, 2 things didn't lock warm clothes in summer and the auto assign to job when another villager dies. Any free villagers get the job regardless if they live on other side of large map, so walking that far is too much.

Yes, similar to when you started this game.
industrial is mines and animal farming food production is placed where animals needs are.
Villagers dont eat much farming food mainly needed for mills, tavern> cows sheep pigs.
Potatoes and pumpkin and cabbages is people food all else is for others.
Fruit orchard and fish and gatherer hunter is main food for villagers to start with later we introduce mill.
Now there is option to build a castle? this is different from just a village where they have market and extra stuff. You can incorperate these into the villages later on with donkeys.
I am letting the game play at speed 2 and grow slowly.
I am at year 33 with a slow population 134 but continous only deaths I see is old age. Accidents.

@Jaunitta, you should IMO set this up as a Community Guide. It will eventually get lost here but anyone who is serious about playing this game will check the guies if they run into problems.

Thankyou Nakia I tried to do that but it gave no other option other than technical or general so I figured maybe they would move it.
I went to the guides and looked for the new thinking I could just copy this over to new but no?? couldnt see anywhere to put it. Maybe I'm not allowed :)

My suggestion: Copy your posts to your word processor. Go to Community Guides, on the right side are a list of options. Go down to Guides you have created, under that is a Create a Guide. Click on that and you can set up your guide. A bit of work on your part I know but consider how good you will feel because you are helping others.
