How can you breed donkeys?
So I have the caravan buildings, 3 of them and the donkey building. There are no donkeys and the one donkey that comes for free with the caravan building eventually dies of old age. It is time consuming to build a new caravan building to get one donkey. What am I missing? The workers are assigned to these buildings and I shift monkeys around so they can make babies.

You have to put a donkey in the donkey farm and wait a LONG time to get more via breeding. You can also get donkey's via expeditions for livestock if you have space in caravan. It's how the Ferdinand Magellan achievement works - you do most of the expedition filling spaces in multiple caravans.

How can I start an expedition? I did everything in the port

Donkey farming does take a long time - they have to be 6 (so two game years after you build the caravan they'd be old enough) before they can reproduce then it takes about a year to produce the new donkey.

The game was original designed with the as the goal so it's a bit complicated.

To do this requires a port which you upgrade to get a ship.

The ship then needs to be stocked with
50 water
40 logs
10 normal clothing
10 high quality tools
20 fish pies
20 meat pies
20 vegetable pies

To get water, build a well.

To get logs either harvest by hand or (more practically) build a forester.

To get clothing hunt wild animals for hides, grow flax and build a weaver's workshop to turn them into clothing.

To get high quality tools you need a lumberjack to make firewood. A kiln to make charcoal from the firewood. A furnance to take charcoal and ore to make it into cast iron, And finally a blacksmith to make logs, ore AND cast iron into tools.

To get get pies you need to grow wheat and build a mill to make four and a bakery to take flour plus other ingredients for pies.

Additionally fish pies need fish (fisherman's lodge), meat pies need meat (hunters or first person hunting), vegetables pies need vegetables (grow, gather or gather in first person) and eggs (raise chickens, grow oats to feed them and have hunters to keep them protected).

To do all of this you will also defintiely need a clay mine and probably want both stone and ore mines.

Alternatively, you can build a market and a stable (to transport too and from the market) and use the market to create clothes/tools/pies from whatever you ARE creating.

Once you get an expedition ready to go choose the option with the cow head. The expedition takes one game year from the time it sets out and you get a random result in the category (although, other than donkeys which you can get as many times as you have spaces , it won't duplicate. Once you have sheep, you won't get them a second time.) If you don't get what you're looking for (donkeys in this case) you have to send out another expedition until you finally get it. There is a 10% chance of any given expedition being lost at see (not dependent on if you lost the previous one) so you may end up rebuilding your boat, although not the port.

Thank you for a well written specific instructions on this. It's good to understand the mechanics of the donkey farm as I have no donkeys in there lol! cheers!
