Blacksmith won't make tools

In two separate games I have made a blacksmith, had all the resources, had someone assigned to blacksmithing, and as soon as I assign them to blacksmithing, they stand around for a little bit, and then the blacksmith building gets the zzz on top of it and they just never make tools.

They make tools in my wife's game. Why the ♥♥♥♥ they won't make tools in mine?

Vanilla. What's happening is they won't bring charcoal into the blacksmith forge, so the blacksmith just goes there and stands around like a moron.
They won't do this even though I have 100 charcoal in the barn right next to the blacksmith and only one barn.

You make a huge mistake : the blacksmith doesn't use charcoal at all.

You need first a Furnace (not the same buidling as a Kiln) to produce 1 cast iron from 2 ore + 2 charcoal. Then the Blacksmith's shop will produce 1 high-quality tool from 1 log + 2 ore + 1 cast iron.

Charcoal looks completely different.... cast iron and charcoal have different icons...

You're welcome. As eien no shikaku said, icons are different, and FYI you have a tooltip showing resource's name when you hover your mouse pointer over the icon.

I wouldn't know as most of the ♥♥♥♥ only pops up below the bottom of the screen. Those icons also look similar if you're not looking for differences, and if you're looking at the tiny little ones that are actually in the game. though it makes way more sense for cast iron to be used than charcoal!
