[Answered] How is planting trees supposed to work?
For me this seems to do nothing, but I've never used any of the 1st person hotkeys before so I'm unsure what to expect:

1. Go into 1st person mode
2. Hit "2"
3. Get three mouse icons on the left telling me that LMB = plant tree, MMB = select which kind of tree, RMB = cancel (the middle mouse button cycles through the tree models nicely so I guess that is working fine).
4. Press LMB, nothing happens. Wait until the inexplicable little blue bar below the hotkey icon fills up, nothing happens. Press LMB again, nothing happens.

???

I also get a sort of green perimeter thingy around the tree-to be, I think (can't really tell since it's hard to see in 1st person on grassy ground).

It's entirely possible I broke this somehow; I'm using a bunch of mods. But since I can't tell how it's *supposed* to work I'm not sure whether it's broken at all or I'm just too impatient or what. (Do trees need a minimum temperature to be planted, perhaps? It was early spring, circa 0°, when I tried this.)

I used it just for fun. Press 2 get the icons, to change the type of tree press 2 again, I haven't quite mastered the placement of trees but I just press the left mouse button and move on to another spot. With the trees growing so fast I don't really need it but once I can remod my game with the slower growing trees I may use.

If the devs keep improving the First Person mode I may do away with gathers, hunters, foresters and herbalist. :steamhappy:

The placement is the problem. If you get an image of a tree in a given spot you should be able to plant it there.

Also I wonder if it is too dependent on the radius set in resources.csv. For FP planting it would be nice to have that ignored since decreasing it can cause problems with too many trees for the rendering to keep up with.

Hm, no I don't seem to be =/ and I haven't messed with the radius in resources.csv, either.

I dunno, maybe it's my keyboard? I'm on a MacBookPro running Win7, german keyboard, system language is English .. wouldn't be the first time that shortcuts are weird =P

No it's just touchy. As I said one should be able to place the trees if one can see them, but unfortunately it's frequently not the case. Try carefully moving the tree and clicking and see if you can get it place anywhere.

It would be nice if FP just let you plant trees anywhere they can grow (so, not in the middle of a building or in the water but any place on empty ground that isn't a cliff too steep for them and given how they show up on some cliffs naturally the game seems pretty foregiving of that.

Is the tree supposed to be the same size as depicted or is it a seed only that is planted

It is a tiny tree.

Small enough to get buried in tall grass, but visible.

Oh, so it is smaller than the "preview tree"? Thanks, I should go check back then -- maybe I just didn't see it because I expected it to be the same size.

OK, I tried it again now and learned two things:

1. the tree that's being planted is MUCH smaller than the "preview tree", that's why I didn't notice it at first (I expected it to be the same size as the preview, like with buildings .. I also kinda expected some sort of visual feedback, like the tool animations you'd see with mining or hunting)

2. one has to wait for the little blue bar to fill up before planting the next tree. Before that, one can click as much as one likes and nothing will happen.

I believe this feature could use some visual feedback. Both for planting ("Tree planted", or some sort of shovel anumation being visible), and for the blue bar thing, which seems a bit odd for this purpose anyway. I mean, planting trees is not some sort of magic power that would need re-empowering? o.O A shovel animation that takes X time to finish would seem much more logical and easier to understand.
