How to get a chicken?

I think my chicken may have died because i cant seem to get one anymore. The trade ship requires vegetable soup which needs eggs so how can i progress further?

i did but it just says 0 chickens

I deconstructed my coop after watching workers hanging around in an empty coop.
I am rebuilding (a bigger coop) now - I hope it will solve this problem and give me one chicken.

Animals will kill your chicken--and FAST--if the area isn't perfectly clear. So if there are any wolves, foxes, or bears wandering about, you won't get any animals in your pens for more than a fraction of a second. I've had them eaten before the thing finished spawning.

Especially for the first coop (or first of any kind of pasture) you want it deep in the heart of the village, as far from the forest as you can get it and with an intown hunter right by it's gate. It can be the smallest one available for the coops. You can also, if you're willing to exploit game mechanics, build another coop, move the chicken to your safe coop, destroy the new coop and repeat a couple of times so if an animal does get in you will still be ok.
