I have a small population of 8. I thought I had plenty of supplies for them for winter

One of the first things youl should build is a farm to plant potatoes. I always build a 16x16 farm which is the max size for 2 workers. I have a full crop harvested by Winter of year 1.

What a brilliant idea I just hadnt thought of that, hmm potato, baked, mashed soup chips endless. I was following a guide posted here on Steam and there was no mention of spuds. Many thanks :)

Your issue isn't food, it could be a place for them to live and eat. If they don't have a place to live, they have no food, no matter how much your colony has.

They all have a place to live. I upgraded one of the huts and built a house. I only have 8 peeps as I started a new game.
This has happened other times where I had food in 1000's with a small population still I get the message shortage of food. But no one has died.

You get the food reserves are low message if you do not have a sufficient variety of food for all the houses. You do need a variety of food in this game. 10K potatoes may feed your villagers but productivity will drop, immunity from disease will also drop. I have had games where I had over 50K food for 100 people but still got the message because my fish store was running very low and I didn''t have enough bread or eggs or honey to replace the missing vitamins.

Yes that makes sense, that's it. They had fish, fruit, bread meat? I also get cancelling collecting resources automatically so maybe it's too cold or not enough around. I havent done too much as I am only in year 1. Thanks so much it makes complete sense I am now in summer and have started new farms and a gatherer and make some clothes before next winter, cheers
