[HELP] Error when trying to run map!
Hi! Im new to J.A.C.K. I create a level, and go to file and press run. I've left all the options to default on the dialog box, and when i try to run it this error message pops up:

** Executing...
** Command: Change Directory
** Parameters: D:/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life/valve

** Executing...
** Command: D:/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life/tools/hlcsg.exe
** Parameters: "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\valve\maps\jack map"

* Could not execute the command:
D:/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life/tools/hlcsg.exe "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\valve\maps\jack map"
* Windows gave the error message:
"The system cannot find the path specified."

The J.A.C.K editor is installed on an external drive with the rest of my games including half life and that. I have all the valve games installed. If anybody could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your compilers are in fact in that path (D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\tools), I'm not sure if the error is referring to not being able to find the compiler or the map file, it seems like it may actually be having a problem finding the compiler itself.

If you need compile tools, I recommend the latest version of VHLT, as it's the most up to date (you could also use the Sven-Coop SDK compile tools, they're based on VHLT).

It's also best to avoid having spaces in your file names. While the original Half-Life compile tools (and newer ones) usually are okay with spaces in the file name, it's a good idea to just not use them to avoid any potential problems (you'd have to use quotes around your map name to load it from the console in Half-Life, for example).

Shouldn't need to reinstall J.A.C.K. or Half-Life, the compilers aren't included with either.

You could also put the compilers somewhere else, they don't need to be in that specific folder. You could have them in "D:\hl-tools", or wherever. You just need to change the entries in the "Build Programs" tab in the game profile in J.A.C.K. to point to the right files.

Also, I just noticed Steam had very kindly removed the link for VHLT, if you need a copy of VHLT v34 the actual link I had tried to post is "http :// www. mediafire. com/ file/ ml0i50vkekijme8/" (just like, remove those spaces).

any idea what the problem is
Jessica Jan 25, 2021 @ 9:05pm
If you name your map something with periods in it (like test1.1), it won't compile properly because it will think the file extension is ".1". This is because J.A.C.K. will pass the file name without an extension by default.

Try not to use periods or any kind of special characters in your file names, keep it alphanumeric and with no spaces. If you're trying to keep track of versions, maybe try doing v100, v101, etc (or use some kind of version control software).

K thanks but i put test1 and it changed the name to test1.1 when i tried to run the map
Jessica Jan 25, 2021 @ 10:20pm
It says in the compile log, "Source: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Cry of Fear\cryoffear\maps\my maps\test1.1.map"
Are you sure your map is called test1?
If you've just renamed it from J.A.C.K. without restarting the editor, you will need to re-export your map to a new file (because otherwise it will use the same old file with the same name). You can do it from the File menu.

btw does:

** Executing...
** Command: Change Directory
** Parameters: C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Cry of Fear

** Executing...
** Command: C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Cry of Fear/cof.exe
** Parameters: +map test1.1

at the end of the log mean anything? like i need to move my files into a different folder?
Jessica Jan 25, 2021 @ 10:24pm
No, it's just changing the current directory to the games folder so it can run the engine. It already copies your map to the right place before compiling.
Riansend Jan 25, 2021 @ 11:29pm
Ok thank you

The link for the compilers?
I have no idea where VHLT is hosted anymore, and I haven't been able to access the Sven Co-op forums where the thread is for years.
But, you can try out seedee's Half-Life tools, which are on TWHL. https://twhl.info/vault/view/6428
These are also based on ZHLT, so they should be pretty good.
