No banners to send knights on attack?

I've only been playing a few hours, been googling and such, but unable to find a way to make my knights attack? There aren't any banners for me to give coins to (inside or outside my keep) and I couldn't find if this mechanic had changed for "New Lands" and if there was a different way to send them.

You need to expand to ANY wall outside of the closest one to your castle on either side to be able to send parties out. Not sure why that's a thing, but it is.
