Both. You can give them an amount of coins before they engage in combat.
I currently have 8 knights.... send your knights to your ship (just like attacking portals) and they will hopp on. Only works for ONE side though.
This way, you can have 2 knights, 2 builders and 8 archers with you when starting on a new island.
They will NOT count towards your new castle, you can add 2 more knights and 8 more archers to that....
Basically if you play perfect, you can pretty much steamroll the second and third island.
The fourth in MY opinion is tough as hell...
THere is also a warhorse, which when you sprint, will "shine" on your minions in sight, making them tougher. I believe they can take several hits before they lose their tools/coins.
