If you bring some coins, archers and knights from the previous islands, and create large hunting fields on either side of your base, you should have a pretty good income very quickly.
Oh, and far as I can tell, the Merchant can't get attacked by Greeds - invincible, so to speak. However, he will not yeild his money unless he's reached your outer walls by sun-up - if he gets there after the morning bells, you'll have to wait a day to get your money. Get him early, and send him early.
Either you're mistaken or that was a bug. The merchant is supposed to *always* appear on island 1 and *never* appear on island 4 or 5.
