Is it just me, or are the hulk(?) enemies op?
Whenever I get to the late game (second island) I've usually destroyed one or both portals, just leaving the large one in the wall. I'm feeling pretty good about myself and the large army I've amassed, but then this hulking enemy goes through, and in a single punch kills two knights and their entire entourage. My towers aren't effective enough to take them out it seems, but i also can't recover from these attacks in a night, and then another one attacks, What's up..? Am I doing something wrong, or is this enemy intended to tell me that I've stayed on the island for too long? My current run is on day 21 and I was about to capture the last portal and leave the island, but my entire, Entire base fell in two nights to those hulks. Upgraded walls don't seem to do anything against them, and I'm not sure fields of upgraded towers are even possible.

If you think towers are a significant part of your DPS every night then your army is far too small to deal with the giants.

Note that with every portal you destroy, the counter attack gets explosively stronger.

Yikes, well that sort of explains it.. When I didn't know how to attack it the portals I lasted Much longer, but when I invested in knights and had a good army, these giants started to swarm me, and I just can't tell what it takes to kill them. How many archers do I need on one side of my base to kill them? I found that the catapult does a great job at killing the little ones once they're so numberous they're like a swarm, but the big ones..... Well I only am able to hire like, 3 people a day if I'm lucky, and that just doesn't seem like enough. I was worried about letting the game drag into the 30s-40s because I assumed the enemies from the original portals would become too difficult to fight off, regardless of a difficulty spike from destroying the portals.

The big guys will come with the counter attack after you destroy a portal. Make sure you prepare.

The enemy will get more tough each night. If you don't plan to play through Day 100, do not linger, just move on, especially if you are still new on this game and haven't unlocked everything yet. You will not survive long after this.

I don't want to spoil you more than this, but there are some helpers to unlock in later islands. They will make the game easier with recruiting and defending your base.

Do not use catapults. The giants throw the boulders back.

Not very often. They are far more useful than a hindrance unless you are going for 100 days, which I never have.

I've never seen them throw the boulders back, but doesn't that just make them MORE OP? How many archers do I need to invest in to keep them at bay?

They aren't that OP, my friend. I don't know why you are getting so many if you have so few archers. Just keep recruiting, cut enough trees down each side and only destroy the pier side portals when you are ready.

Why do you cut trees down? I know the boat moves slowly through trees, but they spawn wildlife for the archers to hunt, yes? And could it be possible I destroyed two portals at once, so the retaliation was twice as strong?

That will be it haha, just do one portal at a time.

Rabbits will spawn if you cut trees down. You'll earn a lot more money that way, just make sure grass grows, you can see little patches of it, it will spread. Clear at least two screens worth of trees each side. You don't want to clear too much as the archers won't get back behind the walls in time, you'll figure it out.

There maybe a camp in the way, cutting the trees down will remove the camp but at some point you'll need to remove it to earn more money. Get a good few people from it first, you'll figure that out as well.

I just unlocked the elk(?) and it's going well. I can just lure deer into the camp and make a Lot of money very quickly at the start of the game. I keep the camps around to recuit more people, and tend to just go way out past them, and widdle down those trees until I can put up a wall. New archers travel through the forest and kill deer, and i get to keep the camps. This plus farms seems to be ok for now. I can escape the island my about round 30 with troops, money, and all the goodies I want, but this does seem to be the point where the mobs overrun my defenses and I begin loosing money.

Unfortunately you can't build in forests

Yeah, but it’s understandable. The trick seems to be investing in archers Very heavily. I had been expecting the knights and catapults to be the most important units, but the knights are mostly just for attacking the portals, and thinning the boards so the archers can finish the job. The various upgrade shines available are helpful, so long as the farms produce enough money, which they definitely seem to!

Knight statue make knights attack enemies during the night i.e. suicide.

Yikes! That’s no good,, I found the statue that lets them leap, and they seem to be taking a lot of extra damage.. Is that the statue you mean?
Also, I’m doing a lot better now. I’m only attacking the portals occasionally, and usually after a blood moon, and it’s a lot easier to deal with! I still can’t last forever, but I can last until about 30, and then it’s best I leave, because the waves overwhelm the defenses I’m able to raise.

Well I made it to day 100. Those hulks aren't so bad as long as you have the firepower to kill them, but if they get through even a single wall, it's super bad.
I did go and look up some videos from years ago and wow, apparently the game has changed a lot since then! They don't throw rocks over the walls anymore, and a lot of prices seem to have been changed. Seems a lot more balanced than it used to be.
