Knights not guarding my boat

I see that it says on the wiki that you can order knights to escort your boat instead of rushing to the portal by doing the exact same action it is to start the expedition (4 coins to banner)

But all my knight squads so far have only been rushing to the portals and bypassing my boat.

What do?

I usually destroy all portals on the dock side first and then send the boat with my knights to the dock.

I can't order them that way too. My knights will not escort the boat if there is any portal left on the way to the dock, they will go and destroy the portal first.

But three archers on the boat can kill the portal. I did that once, but would not do it again since it was risky and I lost some builders too.

thats why I want this supposed escort function to work because the boat is REALLY good at destroying portals. If you dont have too many builders running off at the wrong time, the archers will just slowly eat at the portal until its gone unless any floaters come out. So if you boat up before around day 20, you end up effectively clearing portals unless they bloodmoon a floater out.

I found this out on my first 2nd island play through when I killed my first portal by accident. (they killed my builders, but not before they got my boat within distance so that all four archers was chewing at it

IF we could get this knight escort thing to work, boating up should mean you can get a free portal or 2 easy peasy.

Pretty sure knight escort is a mechanic for after all the portals of dock side are gone leaving them free to escort. The knights will then leave with the boat if they've been paid to escort it. I've never tried to send the boat before having the path clear myself but I'm tempted to say knights won't escort the boat until that portal issue is cleared up. Could still try to time it so the knights get there when the boat arrives if you think it makes it easier.

yeah they arent escorting it. But the wiki describes it as if it will work if theres an active boat on the way. I specifically remember it phrasing as follows: "the mechanic is ordered the same way you start a knight expedition (4 coins to banner) and they will escort the boat instead of rushing to the next portal"

maybe its a two crowns feature. who knows. i stopped playing already. theres way too many overlapping features that ruin the game for me
