Or you can go find the map piece, unlock it for 2 gold and sacrifice your king. Or just restart, I guess.
I didn't even know that could happen on island 2, that's pretty harsh.
Another time there was a portal very close to my castle and my hunters kept walking to it and suicide. Had to destroy it asap with knights
The island setting is random generated, which makes the game re-playable for me.
If unlucky, just restart on island 1 and always bring a full boat with knights, archers, a bag of coins and even a hermit if you find one. This way you can steamroll through it.
Try my strategy though:

It doesn't make that big of a difference whether you brought knights with you from the previous map or not, because you make money ridiculously fast and get 4 knights pretty soon and don't really need any more. Even a single knight squad can take down a portal, and you'll be taking them down one by one anyway to approach the dock.
I had a very bad start over and over again. The vagrant camp was far behind the portal, no chance to survive. After four or five restarts I finally had good conditions. One vagrant camp was still very far away and I could only recruit new villagers after blood moon there, but on the other side was a camp in a better range. Still not very close, but it worked out.
It was also important to have a farmers place close to my starting point. I build it within the first two days to have enough money until the end of the game.
So the second island really needs the good starting conditions, imagine how happy I was to step on the boat in the end. It took me 22 days to complete island 2, four more than for island 1.
