no horse upgrades?

I've been to island 1,2 and 3 and I haven't the only horse upgrade I've seen is the zombie horse on all three islands and I even did island 3 twice and island 1, 4 times

You have to unlock other mounts on other islands. All the islands other than the first have more than one unlock, meaning you have to play through it multiple times in order to get all the unlocks.

Just a bad roll of the dice you didn't get and mount unlocks yet.

Did you pay two gold to the map post on every island? I.e., did you get any other unlocks (statues, hermits,...)

I started a new game after completing all the islands, because I wanted to have a fresh start on the first island, to do a marathon run. And I'm stuck with my brown horse. Not that I mind very much, because the first island is the smallest and has the fewest portals, but I am sure missing the undead horse.

I paid two gold on every island I played ( island 1-3)
and in the map menu, I have a statue on island 1 and 2 (not three because I haven't beaten it yet) I have an archer statue on island 1 and a builder statue on 2
I don't know what a hermit is

Well then you'll find out sooner or later what the hermit is :) it's one of the updates.
