How to unlock dog etc.

So I got to the 4th island when I looked online and found out that you can get a dog, specialised builders and mounts etc. So I started over and I'm now on the 2nd island where you get the dog, but I've looked around the whole island and can't find him or the horses.

I'm pretty sure it's random. The first game I played I had didn't have anything special on my first island but the second time I played I had horses on my first island.

Thats what i thought, i guess im just getting unlucky, thanks.

You need to unlock the dog first, you get him on the second island. You unlock him by getting the map fragment (the signpost) on the second island (the one on the far right) you need to do this a total of 3 times as the dog is the last thing you unlock.

If you press Escape and click the map at the bottom left of the menu, it shows a map of your unlocked features, the dog's statue will appear if you have it unlocked.

After it's been unlocked, the dog will randomly spawn on islands 2-5 in a random location. Sometimes you won't get the dog, but I've managed to get the dog every island I went after unlocking it.

Yes that makes sense, because after comleting the second island for the second time i unlocked the upgraded mounts, so i just need to complete it one more time then, thanks for the help

Yes, and the upgraded mounts are available on every island as you've noticed. Just letting you know here's the immediate differences

Brown Horses: Same as your starting horse
White Horse: Slow sprint, but very high endurance, can sprint across the map in 1 setting.
Black Horse: Higher sprint speed and endurance than starting horse, not as much endurance as white horse.
