He upgrades a 3 archer tower into a tower that can be used to recruit an extra Knight for that side of your Kingdom.
2nd island: dog alerts you of which side is going to be attacked by barking towards that side; horse is a place where extra horses appear (black is fastest, white is not so fast but last longs galloping); the builder statue gives more resistance to the walls.
3rd island: farmer statue makes farmers produce more; the Stag is new mount very fast in forest and that can attract deer so they are easier to hunt; the little guy is the Hermit of TIde and upgrades a 3 archer tower into a ballista (manned by a worker instead of archers).
4th island: the bear is a new mount with not good stamina but that can attack the enemies; the warhorse does a temporal bonus to nearby units when you sprint (they become immune to losing their tools/gold...); the Knight statue makes your Knights to attack from behind the wall to those enemies attacking it; the little figure is the baker and upgrade a 3 archer tower into a bakery (you pay to produce bread and beggars come running from the camps to the bakery, making them easier to recruit).
5th island: the dwarf Chun Li is a hermit that turns the 3 archer tower into a tower that allows you to recruit an extra Knight for that side; the unicorn is a mount that produces about 3 gold when feeding from grass.
I'd suggest building the ballistas in your frontiers and the bakery in one of the two initial ones, close to the campfire. That way, new recruits are close to the tools.

In a file called unity.nionl.kingdom there is a document called unlock
In it,there is something like this:
