Onward

How terrible is the game right now?
So let me be clear, I dont own onward and have never played it since I'm new to VR but I'm really into more realistic shooters opposed to more arcade type shooters and since I've be looking to find a good VR shooter. This game came up as one of the best VR shooters on the market but all the more recent views say the game is terrible now and there is a overflow of filthy oculus players. Something else I found out is that they removed 1.7 which from the videos looked really great and it seems like a deal breaker. I wanted to come here and ask the people who own it what their opinions on it were before I went ahead and purchased the game. Any input would be appreciated.

Don't waste your money. It's sh** compared to what it was back when I bought it. Onward used to be one of the top VR games until 1.8 and later. they have seriously tanked their game in quality, reputation and everything solely to team up with meta, make some extra cash in their pockets, and allow Quest 2 cross play which ALSO resulted in 8 year olds overrunning the game. Just go play pavlov or Contractor$ because this piece of sh** isn't anywhere near worth its price tag anymore

I own contractors already and although it's pretty fun it's also a bit arcadey, Is pavlov a bit more serious?

This game used to lean on the milsim side of things pretty hard and it was amazing! Now I’d say MOH frontline is a better game

The main issue people have with Onward is how the game was downgraded in all aspects when Downgrade studio was bought by Meta and the game was redone to work on the quest 1 hardware. So basically you'll be paying for the cellphone version of the game.

Of course, since you did not play it before, you may actually like it. Just remember that is not going to get any better from what it is now, and that you would have to babysit a lot. I mean that literally.

Main reason i don't recommend it is simply because the devs and publisher have proven that they cannot be trusted.

Quest 1. If the baseline was Q2 we might have some of the missing things back.

Right there with you though. Today and tomorrow will be the last 2 days I get to play the game in any state. If I cannot get oculus homeless to work on my CV1 then I am going to sit out until the Q1 restrictions are gone. I refuse to sign up for a META account just to play Onward. Not after what those dbags did to our game.

Bring back the poly count, LOD, picking up enemy weapons, ragdoll, heavy gunner, and ditch this stupid AI spawning in garbage and I'll cave in and sign up for a stupid META account. Otherwise, see you around.

Well, pity, was going to add a 'balanced view'!

I first brought the PC version, for the same reason as you are looking, I don't want an arcade game full of kids 'bouncing' around (literally). This game doesn't have jump which make's it more realistic than contractors/pavlov (note, I don't have these but watching YT vids is enough to inform).

All the 'beef' is about the introduction of cross play which necessarily nefed the game graphical performance on PC. I have also brought the Q2 version so I can play 'sans cable' and it is indeed flatter, (but cleaner) than the PC version still. It's pros and cons as to make a game PROFITABLE and therefore supported for years to come they need a player base. Could the game survive on the PC only MilSim crowd, I don't know but I've got plenty of dead games in my library because the economics didn't add up. The game is still in 'early access' so sorry, you pay your cash and take your chance!

If you want the 'realism', get the PC version, find a like-minded crowd (without the school kids) and you will be fine. There's 20 adds a day in the discord of groups recruiting, there's plenty of options out there including full on VRML. Depending on your timezone avoid the kids by playing later at night, of build a friends list and create your own server!

If you want the 'freedom' the Q2 version is OK, the game play is fine you just loose the visuals to a fair degree. (there's 1.8 PC Vs Q2 compare vids on YT, DONT compare to 1.7 as that's not what you get now).

It's on sale in Oculas store now!

If you really don't want to coin up to Meta, suggest you burn your PC now and coin in with China, your VR options are not wide!

Yup. Here's the statement from their neo-nazi headquarters:
https://www.meta.com/help/accounts/oculus-accounts-notice/

I had hopes that oculus homeless would circumvent that but it doesn't look like an active project anymore. If there is a work around, we'll have to leave it to the nerds of the world uniting to patch it. Never know if anyone haas the determination to do that.

---- Warning. RANT ---

FYI to anyone who doesn't get why many of us refuse to create a META account - we're just not willing to give them the satisfaction and free endless data. If they want us on board, they need to start paying us to use their garbage. We - all of us oculus users - paid for their R&D by tolerating their chain of abuse. CV1, Rift S, Quest 1, Quest 2. Each one released within a year or so of the other, making the standards change, and incrementally decreasing the viability of the products we bought (which were NOT in anything like "early access").

You think you're pissed about a $20 bait and switch from Downpour? I dropped maybe $4,000 on VR equipment almost exclusively for Onward. Now I cannot even use that equipment because the demand of a gaggle of idiots has made my whole system obsolete for a game that was reduced to ash for what might asa well have been no damn reason at all.

If they want my data, they can pay me for it. That's the only viable structure for universal basic income as I can see it. The participatory model. Force them to reverse the expectations and overhaul the advertising approach. Same for Amazon Prime. Why are people paying $12 a month to Amazon? They don't need that. They should pay all of us $12 a month to have Prime. You know we all would order more and they would easily make up the loss. Same for Meta.

So no. Go f*ck yourself facebook. You sh*t on our headsets, then sh*t on our game, then expect a compliant conversion? I'd love to see their reaction IF the world unitedly refused to use META after today. Never going to happen, I know, but hey. If we don't stand somewhere what's the point of standing at all?

The unfortunate truth.
Well said. Well, i'll have to try to revoke internet access to the oculus app and see if it still works in half an hour. If not, thats more free space on my hdd. Is Vermintide 2 interesting? Or is one of those multiplayer only games that allow to play alone just to justify the "single player" tag?

People keep talking about how the game is downgraded...but youve never played it...so theres no downgrade for you.
I've owned this game for a couple years (well before 1.7) and i can say, yeah, the graphics were downgraded, but a lot of the maps were changed for the better. Back in the day they were dead open spaces.
In terms of gameplay the game does a good job imo. I like it more than any of the other multiplayer shooters i've played. and its not hard at all to find any games.

The game is absolute garbage now, even by VR standards.

It's gone from a near AAA game to one of those something cheap and nasty no name games you pick up on sale for $5

You’re so unhappy because you’ve drawn a load of red lines around yourself. There are ways to get back at FB by having an account, you just need to be imaginative.

Oculus would have died without Meta investment. This game would have died without new players’ money.

Anyway, joining a squad of like minded players is the way onward with this game. Sniveling about everything will just make you bitter and unhappy.

I’m still amazed at where we are.
