If I had to guess I'd say the locked ones were league players or something. Largely the 1.7 community is more than willing to get more players on board but it might require them knowing you're coming.
I'd go there and ask around. You'll get live feedback and probably get into a match quickly, or at least get shared on a schedule or some passwords to lobbies.
1.8 was originally called the performance update. Improving performance it did. I can't exactly argue with that. I would never have traded the features we lost for that performance though.
on a side note, Bigwing and I play the custom maps way more then the classic maps and an open room tends to bring in players that dont have the custom maps so we are only allowed to play the classics
tbh, I'm only down to do Co-Op since PvP would be nasty against... someone as seemingly expert at this like you. But I didn't mean in that quote that just because you're good = bad. Just frustrated at what I see in Discords vs reality.
But yeah, that classic map situation really is just a symptom of a dead game. Same thing with DLC. Best you could do is add classic players and send them that github that automatically downloads the maps and hope they do it. That's how I got on board.
