Onward
What would you build for an ideal VR PC to run Onward?
I've about had it with my piece of cr*p. It runs so bad it's like my machine is trying to simulate being drunk in the battle field.

I'm curious for all who are super into building monster gaming machines - what would your ideal rig be to run this on full settings across the board. Anything to make it run like real life where the only bottleneck could possibly be my own internet connection.

I'm running an oculus CV1 but not because I care to stay on it. Only because all other setups I've tried have issues with tracking when you get a controller up to your face. I heard word that you can trick the HP Reverb to use index controllers, or something. I have no problems ditching the CV1 if it means the controllers work when they are right up on your face.

I'm open to getting foolishly expensive if it means I never again have to deal with this insane constant frame drops to like 4 fps every 10 seconds. This has to end!

Thanks

There is no way this would end this year or even next year , as you probably won't find any graphic card to build a PC. For me 1070 works fine for the CV1 but not for Quest 2.
I have a 1070 sitting in the garage if that helps, but I also don't really have a limited budget. If I had to pay outrageously for a graphics card I could, though reluctantly. The graphics card I suppose at least had that going for it. But I am not much of a hardware person so when poking about with online builds it is hard to tell where gaming ends and like 3D shop development begins. I want to build a monster that will never again choke Onward, but not over build and make something Pixar would use to make movies. If all else is available, I can use the 1070 until whatever GPU I'm gouged for finally arrives in 2024.

Running a Quest 2 at 3248x1684 using Link, I built a new rig last year, before the new GPUs dropped, R5 3600, 32gb ram, opted to stay on my 1070, I have had zero performance issues with Onward on maximum settings. I don't think the game is particularly GPU heavy, especially since they downgraded a bunch of it to get the game running on the Quest 2 natively.
I get the impression 1070 is sufficient as well, but I sort of want to bullet proof the system just in case. I've been dealing with the mistake of not doing that for 4 years with a ROG laptop I can't modify. The 1070 will save me a good $1500 on GPU in the interim though. Plus, I think 1070 can handle 1.7 fine.

Any thoughts on the rest of the build?
Onward runs perfectly on my I7 10700k and 1070 with 16gb 3600mhz ram. I found that when I had 12 gigs of ram on my old rig the game was frequently at 100% memory usage and crashed and stuttered all the time for like 5 seconds, I think its pretty ram intensive. I recommend a new decent CPU, 10th gen intel is great in my experience, be sure to have at least 16 gigs of ram, and a 1070 will for sure do the job well but If you can get your hands on a 2070 2080 series or 30 series nvidia card of any kind you'll be set for the next years.
Awesome, thanks. Lol, nice screen name also!

It's mostly dependent on what VR headset you use. I use a Rift S and my specs are a R5 3600 with RTX 2060 with 16gb of RAM. The game runs exceptionally for me, but a GTX 1070 should be good enough to play this game (given that you use a Rift S). If you use headset that has more pixels, like a Valve Index, you might want to have more GPU power. The game is more GPU heavy so as long as you have a decent CPU that has came out in the past 4-5 years you should be fine.
Yeah, and I think I'm more or less leaning on higher end for the sake of being useful longer. I haven't decided a replacement headset for the CV1 yet.

I have a rtx 2080 Super & i7 9700k. It has no problems running smooth on max until i'm in the 300% resolution range. I've heard VR had problems with the 3000 series but if that's fixed i'd go with a 3080. If not, a 2080ti would be my next choice.

im about to sell my 2080ti and you have dibs for 1600$ usd.
Tempting but I could get an A01-LD for that... if it were a complete system with a 2080ti included it would be much easier to make that decision. Thanks though.

...dang, that's not necessarily bad though. They're like $2k or so. Wow.

no way a 2nd hand 2080Ti is worth $1.6 - 2K, wth are u lot smoking
Worth has to do with availability though. I don't think so either but if it's what I need to get Onward running on all max settings then I might have to bend over and take it on this one.

I'm not convinced of a replacement HMD for the CV1 yet. If the G2 updates their software to compensate for the hand drifting when controllers are close to the face set then I will likely buy a system that can go full throttle even if the price is ridiculous. Way she goes.

Convince him to get something soon, I only get on when 36 does (He's my brother) and I haven't played this game since May 8th. It's been DCS while waiting, while that's fun, I need to get my murder on again
