If that happened now, we would be trading useful additions to the structure of a damn near isolated game in uniqueness, non-BS saturated milsim for the whimsy of a demographic. If all these other FPS games have zombies, then PLAY THOSE! When you want to play uncluttered, non-cartoony milsim combat then turn to Onward. If a player is so dissatisfied by a lack of zombies that they won't buy the game or continue to play it, then F them. You couldn't keep them satisfied anyhow.
Or how about this, if you really think Onward needs zombies - MAKE YOUR OWN GAME! That's where Onward began. It's apparently possible and eventually, if you're lucky, you'll understand what it's like to have a vision for a game and have a handful of people harp all over your hard work by insisting you need to add poo emoji villains and a dance mode. If all other games have these modes, maybe it shows THEY have a lack of vision, and a desperation to conform.
F zombies. More maps, weapons, objectives... and fix the map selection screen.
To be clear, I agree with a zombie MOD. If someone branches, and makes a full on zombie version with zombie logic, then a-ok. But if the demand is for the devs to flesh that out, then that's where my psychotic rant comes from.
My only point is the time and support investment behind programming zombie spawn, animation, AI, etc to wrap within the current structure of the game. Plus, what would PvP be? That to me sounds like an allocation of time, money, energy, and potential hotfix public disaster that is not worth the trade off on the core game. On a mod, yes, absolutely. It would be spectacular. But that's a job for the community and not the devs.
It's possible from a dev standpoint they are collecting usage data and logging issues to release stable versions in the future. Unless they speak up on the subject, we can only speculate.
Mr Death... any thoughts on that?

You'll get much faster attention there.
Weather those millions of people in those other games agree with me or not, I stand by my statement that Zombies have no place in Onward.
If it has no place in Onward, then the Onward community would ignore it, just like CQB mode is ignored in Elite Dangerous, or how nobody *really* plays joke cars and tracks in Assetto Corsa.
They're there if you want to try them with your buddies, and everyone's happy.
If Onward is 2serious4fun game modes why keep stuff like Gun Game?
And speaking of gun game - Any reason why it's backwards? You're supposed to get handguns and other "crap" guns AFTER the good ones so the rest of the people can catch up. In Onward once you get through the handguns, it's a breeze because you get increasingly better SMGs and rifles until the knife, which then turns into a nightmare, because everyone's already at rifles and machineguns. It's not a complicated formula, why try to re-invent the wheel like that?
