Background:
I installed the BH Demo first on my Desktop and played through the ten songs with my PS3 controller using MotionInJoy’s drivers and DS3 tool. (Incidentally in my research and testing I learned that Scarlet.Crush is a MUCH better PS3/4 controller solution!) I was hooked and bought the complete package (I have all the DLC), and indexed my ~GB library. I then wanted to play two players on the TV using two PS3 controllers and my Laptop (Scarlet.Crush). Not wanting to mess with network shares / wait to move music / re-index all my tracks / re-install BH I simply used Steam’s new In-Home Streaming feature (Which is very nice). This is where I ran into…
The PROBLEM:
BH wanted me to configure controller buttons. No problem, I’m using PS3 at this point so I kind of expected a small hitch. I configured controller one, then selected multiplayer only to find no option to play with controller 2. I got a, “Player 2 [left-click symbol] to join!” message with no [Xbox 360 a button symbol] next to it. Brick wall. Controller 2 is not recognized. At all.
So I order a wireless receiver for my Xbox controllers. (They only sell knockoffs anymore, I know, but it still works like a charm as long as you know how to use device manager. All the other games loved said knockoff paired with my 100% genuine Microsoft Xbox 360 controllers so I ruled that out as a factor when…) …Surprise, Surprise, same result: configure controller one, and player 2 can suck on that brick wall.
I clear PS3 drivers and tools off the laptop and re-install official Xbox drivers. Brick wall.
I re-install Xbox drivers on Desktop. Brick wall.
I search the internet and find no indication that two players can actually use two controllers with this game. (a lot of people asking how to use two Keyboards and Mice, how to use one PS3/other random gamepad, but nothing on two Genuine Xbox controllers.) That’s when I posted here to see if I should continue.
The SOLUTION:
I am a lucky man. I tell you this today because I may not have found the solution for another week or so if I hadn’t literally crashed into it--like a tiny ship surrounded by that giant snake boss and like 600 other enemies with no smart bombs, and no lives, just as Johann Straus drops the intensity of his Operetta off the international space station solely to render said tiny ship’s weapons completely useless--because of what Valve did today.
Today Valve fixed several In-Home streaming bugs and crashes related to NVidia graphics cards. One of said crashes tricked me into trying to launch the game Saturday night without any connection to the Desktop. I unwittingly set the game to install itself on my laptop, which is surprisingly easy to do in Big Picture by the way. So after I got the green light from KorDen to start trying new configurations I launched the game to discover that everything worked perfectly—and that I had no songs.
I put two and two together realized that my craptop could actually play this game by itself and it was a simple (and agonizing) matter of transferring all my music over and re-indexing it all (with slower hardware). Now everything works, and I’m too happy to fiddle with fixing the problem of Streaming + Controllers because 1) every other game I’ve tried already works fine that way, and 2) I don’t have time to tempt fate like that. Perhaps someone else would like to test their own configurations for in-home streaming BH.
THE EXCITING CONCLUSION:
Don’t stream this one across two different computers with their own sets of drivers. Move your music over or map yourself a network drive. Then ensure your local machine’s installation and drivers are in order and it’ll work natively. Steaming across two computers with more similar configurations was not tested.
Thanks for helping and reading. Just hope I’ve left enough information here to help someone in a similar situation now that In-home Streaming is out of beta.
Its a settings in the properties on your steam library -
- Right click the game or click the gear icon on the splash page and choose "properties".
- Goto controller
- Click the drop down that has the header "OVERRIDE FOR BEAT HAZARD"
- Choose "Disable Steam Input"
This is why some users are reporting the controller(s) working fine but others (like myself) had to set up of the controller every time the game booted up and 2 players didnt work with a second controller.
