I installed DFO after reading your post (all 35GB of it) and using an older Proton GE (newer one probably also works) I am not getting kicked and can play perfectly fine. I've been playing for almost two hours now.

The game looks gorgeous on the OLED, and at 6TDP it gives me about 7+ hours of battery life. This is with 90hz enabled to reduce the input lag even more, you can tune it further by lowering the TDP or refresh rate to 60hz.

Keep in mind you will have to spend some time configuring the controls. There are community layouts available you can easily apply, but you'll then have to map those keys in-game as well. Or you can just play with keyboard if you are used to that.

I'm just a casual DFO player who plays the events/likes the graphics - so I don't know how this would fare in one of the higher end dungeons/raids.

The last time I tried on Steam Deck was over a year ago, at that time the game definitely did kick you after maybe 15 minutes. So I'm glad this has been solved. Would be nice if the developers would comment on it though so we know we will be safe forever.

Reinstalled the game on Deck yesterday, and played it today. It works great for me - no hassle installing it and playing for an hour.
