dfo in general wasnt particularly made for things like controllers in the first place or even any compact control scheme of sorts as they defaulted to 12 skill hot keys (from 6 hotkeys initially with the other 6 starting out as expanded hotkeys that can be optionally enabled on the UI before becoming default because everyone always had it enabled) with 4 basic functions (basic atk, 2 skill command keys and a jump button) alongside with 6 item hotkeys very early on so you wouldve need like 22 buttons to keep track of from the very beginnin even if some of them you dont press as much
this is already excluding some other features too like opening the various inventory and other menus, opening up the map/overview in and out of dungeons, using pet/creature skill etc and even the less used dungeon and equipment special key as some area and gear that activates special effects that needs to be manually turned which is only ever enable in certain dungeons and using certain gears and then they later added 2 more skill hotkey for a total of 14
there is also a feature to command in skills over hotkeying them too which most people reserve for less used skills or buffs which arent used enough in actual combat to justify a hotkey slots towards and a quick glance at most classes' gameplay will easily tell you that almost every class has some degree of high APM even if it doesnt directly correlates to actual skill
TLDR unfortunately you would either have to get a full keyboard or be very attuned to a specific customization layout that works for you
I have all movement, 12 skills as well as normal attacks and jumping set to different buttons on the controller. The last two skills I have set to the keyboard, but I mostly put buffs or skills I use very rarely on those keys.
Other controllers may also work, but that's not something I can test myself. I think pretty much any kind will do if you have the proper software though.
Space to Jump.
Caps lock for equipment abilities.
Then the numberpad for all other abilities.
+ to back dash.
Q and E plus the WASD for quick buffs. Each of those can have up to 5 abilities on them.
Of course I have a full keyboard. The numberpad is great for typing and other games that need a lot of hotkeys like MMOs, Warframe, Flight sims.
