It looks fantastic and I can't wait

I didn't play too much DFO, got a few level 20's back in the Nexon days in the early 2010's, and a level 50 back when Neople launched the game globally in 2015 or 2016.

That being said, I'm stoked to see it getting an arc sys fighting game. It looks great so far. Great month for fighting games this has been.

it is kind of weird since so many of the(especially early)DFO characters are heavily inspired by fighting game characters from cap,snk and even arc system works
to now have a fighting game
made by arc system works
weird

I wish they actually show more actual gameplay in the near future
and I was a little disapointed with the latest video they made with the berserker
they did not show his most iconic move
his godgrab

im mixed on this, sorta hoping he cant use bloodlust in dnf duel but at the same time i wish he can so fgc can experience purgatory
yea... im feeling a bit sadistic atm

That's the reason why I came back to check out the game. Freaked out when I saw a level 70 character that I don't remember.

fgc is weird like that iirc though there also a lot of comments that makes it obvious they never heard of dfo or never played a mmo before, many trying to be smartasses too about the character's names
the grappler's vid specifically also shows that a lot of people are completely oblivious to the fact that not all grappling is wrestling :eyeroll:

uhhh...
might wanna get that checked out, in the past inactive accounts accounts got cracked into and have the account turned into bitcoin miners for shady stuff leading to the account being either banned or trade-locked with the account themselves being flagged to have all tickets ignored

This comment triggered my attention, I just wanted to share some experience. It happens that I come from fgc, it's been almost 3 decades that I play fg. I also practice martial arts and fighting. I've played MMO a lot when I was younger, (FFXI mostly), enough for banning it from my life because it was toxic. I knew about DFO years before DNF Duel was announced, I never gave it a try but thanx to DNF I might check how it works.
Grappler character is definitely using some cool techniques that are closer from how an all around fighter should be, I'm definitely hyped by this one more than any new fg character.

mgrap is a mixture of taekwondo and judo from my understanding so he has a lot of skills that seems more like strikes then actual grabs while also either having actual striking skills too like magnumsault or striking skills that is only coded as a grabs in game but irl would be a striking skill like wild cannon strike
many of his grabs ends also ends in kicks strikes (as a whole m fighter is mainly kicks vs f fighter's mainly punches) or throws instead of typical wrestling schtick and while hes not slow hes not that fast either but definitely not the typically expected grappler character
Shizuma Dec 9, 2021 @ 7:47pm
Kicks motions definitely look like taekwondo but the way he grabs and slams is much more sambo than judo even if his fighting style and movements are fantasy. Grappling also usually involves many ground techniques but from what i’ve seen this character doesn’t use it. On a side not in a fight you usually strike the opponent to open the opportunity to lock him down while here the character seems to grab then release the grab with a strike, but i understand it looks more flashy that way. But it is interesting to see a character that sticks more with what an all around fighter should look like.
I’d say fortunately he is not the typical grappler we expect, those characters usually massive are wrestlers and are just some copy pastes from one to another.

I take the opportunity of that discussion to ask you, is dfo still a good pick for a typical fg player in 2021 or should i just pass?
Fuyuki Dec 9, 2021 @ 10:02pm
not familiar with sambo or any non popular grappling/martial arts outside of the ones that commonly come up in pop culture and no disrespect but in-game the male fighter specifically comes from the nation of suju which is apparently dfo's equivalent of japanese-korean mix and lorewise many asian inquired classes sources their skills and techniques from suju

considering that all of his subclasses is more asian-esque then female fighter even when its not something inherently related to asian culture (e.g male brawler's designed is seemingly of chinese mafia/triad with even his 1st awakening name in other/original ver being thousand-handed buddha) i think its safe to say that mgrap is using a taekwondo-judo fusion and especially so when his class lore pins him as a member of the Black Opal Gang that goes around challenging martial arts dojo that were rich in material wealth to a match to disband the losing side while also completely ignoring dojos that where rich in history instead pretty much screams typical asian martial arts novel plot

pass if you're expecting something like an actual fighting game or close to it, dfo gets off of on its mmo aspect rather then its potential fighting game base and is heavily an beat'em up mmo more then anything else

granted unless you're in complete aversion to anything that isnt a fighting game dfo is still a pretty good game to just try out, it manages to capture something like no other and even a lot of jaded vets over on reddit will admit to not being able to find anything that can scratch a similar itch in the modern gaming industry

There are different approach to that if we want to figure out which fighting background mgrab has. From a developer approach they are free to grab moves from different world fighting style, like sambo. If we want to stick with the character lore that only practiced in eastern asian countries, then we could assume he uses jujitsu or nihon taijutsu. I doubt about judo, mgrapler throws are just too violent for judo. Many fighters nowadays have to learn from foreign countries styles, that could also fit lorewise that he uses non asian fighting styles. Martial arts evolve and often pick techniques from each others, not to mention this guy is a fighter rather than using strictly traditionnal martial arts moves. I should learn a bit about DFO lore and Black Opal Style, that seems interesting.

I noticed to beat'em up mmo aspect. I'd say I have some fears about how entertaining endgame could be. Also I was always disapointed with f2p games being finally heavily focused on p2w and finally pretty expensive if you want to play it seriously. I'm also concerned about new account bans, i'd be frustrated starting in a game and finally get banned for no reason during progression. Beside that I like it's design and I like beat em up so this should be ok from that side.

actually sorta does, his base fighter lore is that hes a martial artist practicing traditional suju's fighting that differs from other continents' fighting style that focus on weaponry and upper body strength by focusing on kicks instead and is traditionally passed down from men to men at a very young age
being too violent is explained by and i quote "The Suju style movement range is much larger, and appears more aggressive; however the true nature of its power lies in the streets kept sacred to those who complete training. Of course, fully trained Suju fighters are rarely seen because of the region's strict laws, which prohibits contact with outside territories; except for special cases..." basically its a hall mark of someone who is yet a master of traditional suju fighting and this ties in with the actual male fighter character's backstory as someone who left his own dojo because during an attack he purposely broke formation to take out the enemy due to his own impatience, he was successful in repelling the enemy but because he left his post the defense collapse resulting in many of his fellow trainees suffering and after seeing this he blamed himself then left on his own the next day as a self imposed punishment
the lore also pointed out that traditional suju fighting was the base used to develop mfighter's strikers, brawlers, and grapplers fighting style differing from the female fighter's version deriving from shannon myre a renowned fighter who dominated the de los empire arena and became famous enough to get her name used as leverage and was allowed to set up dojos all over suju teaching her fighting style to others there but she also strictly refused to train any men both because her fighting style was meant for the female form and because of her own sexist attitude so there is a sort of segregation between the technique base of female and male fighters

of course this isn't to say taht the male fighter isnt allowed to borrow from other discipline or foreign styles but nothing in lore really points to that direction and it would make more sense for him to primarily used various eastern oriented suju fighting styles specifically to remain distinct from female fighter western orientation since the only thing they really share in terms of lore is their nen master subclass and they even differ in that by having the female nen master ironically be the traditionist represented by a dragon motif whose usage of nen can be defensive and healing in addiction to offensive whereas male nen master utilizes a dangerous forbidden nen technique that consumes his own life force represented by a tiger and is overwhelmingly more offensive in nature lacking any healing and many of his female counter's defensive capabilities as even his own version of nen guard is much more smaller and briefer

well its still an mmo, you cant exactly just jump into the game and be end game ready so fast and without effort but as for things like p2w it really depends on who you ask; some will say yes as a short asnwer but a more elaborate answer is that its p2 progress faster since gearing is rng (which by nature isn't exactly p2w applicable), some of the end game mandatory items like pet, title and aura offering noticeable dmg boost is very much cash only but there is generally budget version of these stuff being only slightly weaker and the way sales packages is set up encourages whales to buy multiple packages and then sell off the items they don't need resulting in many of the budget items being sold on market for just a few to several mil in in-game gold

if you decided to try dfo out then avoid steam and download and play from the site instead, it isnt completely issue free but its much more lenient and also set up 2FA as soon as you can to try to run into any security concerns
Shizuma Dec 10, 2021 @ 1:39pm
Well, thank you for this nice introduction to the lore of fighter characters, this was interesting to read. I'd like to try the game, for now I can't really play it, I broke my left arm badly during a sparring fight 10 days ago, but as soon as I'll be up I might give it a shot. I launched steam version today just to see how commands responds. Overall design looks pretty interesting.

dfo's lore tend to be rather scattered and have to be pieced together but being +15 years old definitely gave them a lot of time for world building though its various character lores and story, they have gone through like 2 retcons but things still remain fairly consistent like how empyrean despite being so modernized with science and technology confuses newer players with their mermaids and andromorphic croc-man pirates and turtle-man ninjas (i swear this isnt a tmnt reference... or at least i dont think so) including a ghost train scenario too because originally it was another high-fantasy setting and only modernized developing guns, missiles and other modern-day weaponry within recent centuries(?) due to the prohibition on magic by dragon king bakal and despite their non-magical inclination in recent times the people of empyrean still very much capable of learning and using magic as evident by 1 of the npc trying to become empyrean's first modern mage after a pathway opened up again between the two worlds and the gunner's spitfire subclass actually learning magic to give his bullets and explosive elemental properties

the setting is also used in pretty unique ways as empyrean is militarized chinese-korean mix and thus worshiped asian mythological creatures such as dragons before bakal descended and while he has left them with a deep fear of dragons even after his reign was over the people of empyrean still respect and revere dragons that when their princess now queen arrived in the middle of a rebellion while riding a large red dragon it caused quite a stir https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8q-OksBoaA

other stuff includes the more stereotypical fantasy tropes like dark elves vs dwarfs dynamic but with a twist as dark elves and dwarfs are trying to commit genocide to one another but the dark elves's queen maya is rather altruistic for waht would be expected from a fantasy dark elf whereas dwarfs are practically downright insane with how gold greedy they are while normal elves is actually extinct

then we the giant rhombohedron structure housing a broken off piece of a planet taht exploded long ago just drifting across time-space known as pandemonium or should i say; New York City..., the usage of of bronx, brooklyn, queens, manhattan, long island, metro center, central park, time square, sugar hill etc is actually appropriate and not just for stylistic points
