Also, the game does recognize at least some controllers, so you can bind things like jumping/attacking/skills to the various buttons (as seen in the screenshot below).

For anything related to the UI, menus etc; you will pretty much have to use mouse and keyboard, though, which may be an issue for some (having to switch between controller and mouse+keyboard).
steam controller will work for basic input (movement, jumping, attacking, manually inputting skills), but in my experience it doesn't work for hotkeys and menus. YMMV though, I cant see anyone playing DFO with a controller and having actual fun.
2. Right and down do not work from my keyboard in this game (no computer fault, work perfectly well elsewhere), left and up work, right and dwon no action, redefine keys and all four directions work, put them back to arrows and no right or down!! Windows 10 Home.
3. Game will not pick up XBox controller on my system at all.
Very Frustrating!
Only need basic movements on controller though, rest on keys.
STEEP is a reasonable example of how to get a lot of actions on an XBox controller, so can be done.
Nobody else got this issue then?
nope. you sure it's not a computer issue?
