No, just an increment of the chain counter.
I read on multiple forum that the enemy could not die during the chain, thus believed it was true. Never trust the internet!

Now, one nice thing is, as stated, each step checks the targets as they were before the combo was executed, so in the above example (two attacks on A, then an attack with A and B, then just B) even if A dies on attack 1, it will still say combo 2, then combo 3 during the spell, and ending with combo 4. Load up on attacks, and hope they die fast so you can back them up and start a new combo train elsewhere! I don't know how well this works with attacks that reposition though, especially since I can't play on my mac currently and thus can't test it...
