Swords, Guns and Fists are all amazing.
Axes give the highest power + a Star elemental skill, but the accuracy penalty is restrictive until you can get high leveled legendary ones, and the lack of AoE on characters without special moves can be frustrating.
Spears can also be awkward to use if you lack other targeting options, and are kind of lacking in power. They seem to work as intended though.
Bows are pretty good earlier in the game and provides an option to have a physical water attack, but later on their lack of power (even weaker than spears) makes them less useful. Would be good for sniping gatekeepers if it wasn't for the random treasure spawning. Still good for building combos.
-High Speed on a unit (Adell, Ninja, Kunoichi) or good Counterattack (Sinners) usually indicates Fists will be the best bet, plus you can manipulate enemy positions with many of the skills.
-Guns and Bows are great for getting increased accuracy on combos - Bows for when you have a decent Attack stat and/or don't have a straight line of sight and Guns for lowering the target's Speed and slightly superior range (unless you're using a Bow with an Archer).
-Axes are the gods of damage-per-hit and can lower a target's Defense for even more damage on subsequent hits, but have no multi-target skills of their own and suffer from low Accuracy.
-Swords are pretty average for stats, but make up for it with lots of AoE skills that can hit from angles you may not have been able to hit normally.
-Spears are like slightly-weaker Swords with a bit of extra reach and can manipulate the wielder's position with many of the skills, plus you automatically Defend against frontal attacks. Tank-y units like Heavy Knights are great with these for obvious reasons.
Mage-types (Witches, Skulls, Healers, and some Magic Knights) will use a Staff for obvious reasons. While they are barely-halfway-decent for smacking something upside the head, mastering them increases Range, Damage, and AoE options for Magic, which is pretty heavily weighted in the earlier Disgaea titles.
Sword, Staff, Fist - I consider these the big three if for no other reason than because they have the best AoEs for CoO4. The problem with the fist in late end game is the extra stuff it brings aren't needed anymore. You don't need to reposition enemies if you can kill them outright and SRS take care of any stat issues. The sword's dimensional slash and drak x end up being more powerful and useful. Winged Slayer is flat out better than big bang for clearing LoC CoO4 with frequent reincarnations. Staves are by far the best in terms of damage and targeting flexibility, but they take more time (as in you have to spend extra seconds to select attack size and confirm and this does add up).
Spear - Nice to have in the item world. Fist reposition enemies (i.e. gatekeepers), while spear resposition yourself. Very nice to have if you're boxed in to your starting panel. I actually suggest giving an angel one so you have the option of turbulence or asteroid to clear out enemies near your starting panel. I highly, highly recommend having at least one angel around to pick up level up spheres if nothing else so you might as well give her an useful role as well.
Axe - Aside from high atk, it's fairly useless. However, the calamity drive skill does do a crap ton of damage and applies a defense debuff on non-bosses. This works on item gods which is helpful for the first couple of kills before you have multiple perfected rank 40s.
Gun/Bow - I keep a pair around and you might as well if you use Rozy and Thieves. They don't have much going for them if you already use the above weapons. I originally gave my angel a bow but she generated a lot of treasure chests out of gatekeepers which was very annoying.
I have about 6 perfected Omniscient Rods and one 3 movement Omniscient Rod running about destroying everything on Item boss floors.
The weapon I use the least in any disgaea games are Axes since they usually only have single target skills.
I can use guns, spears, and bows in CoO4 to kill the remaining 2 enemies on the map when level grinding to grind total levels for those characters (with 300 felonies they level pretty much the same as any character with no felonies killing 6 of those enemies). Axe users I'm forced to give them a Sword and use that until they max their total levels.
Luckily 255 weapon mastery is extremely easy to reach with any weapon.
