Equip them to your characters before heading into the Item World to increase your chances of getting more.
You cant get more then 1 of each type, they dont spawn if you already have that type, so yes, 16 different types and something fancy happens.
EDIT: What ZirzoR said. :P
Personally, I find the treasure maps specialists to be kinda hit or miss ( im assuming its random as to what specialists they get) Some will have multiple stat based ones and others will have one miscellaneous one (armsmaster, cryophile, etc) which makes it pointless to equip since treasure maps dont have innate stat boosts.
Don't underestimate the sheer amount of stat boost innocents even super low level maps get. They can be pretty viable early on if you get a good one!
I was more meaning the less useful ones (brokers, cryophiles, firefighters, etc are less useful than stat bonus innocents, imho)
In terms of item worlding them, ive discovered that reverse damage can be just as, if not more, useful as invincibility. Simply put your characters on reverse damage tiles, and, apart from a few enemies that will heal kill you (but just throw em onto a higher level enemy and away goes the risk) you can either whack the crap out of them, or, my favourite option, combine all the enemies into one, trap it on a reverse damage tile and spam heal.
It's been ahile since I played this game, but I'm pretty sure they do give you something nice indeed, if a bit full of Carnage. :)
Currently, I wouldn't worry about it at all, and go through item worlds normally, you'll get the pirates to troll you enough without searching for them, at least that's been my experience.
That includes a lot of Rank 30 gear. Whatever the highest in the shop is.
