i also had this issue , but i found a way to "fix" this problem ,not sure if you already done this and your game is still crashing , plug your controller after you started the game not before. thats seems to work for me and also it fixed another issue i used to have that the game didnt have sound for some reason if i put the controller.

You need to run a Windows 8 virtual machine on your current Windows machine.
1. install virtual box
2. Download the windows 8 iso file. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO
3. Add a new virtual machine to virtual box using the windows 8 iso and boot the virtual machine. Don't worry if it crashes.
4. Start the game.
I'm still trying to understand this myself but I think when the windows 8 vm is installed, it's DLLs are saved on the host machine. These are the same DLLs our game needs to start, so the game finds them during startup and it actually starts.
My original plan was to play the game in the windows 8 virtual machine. Once I figured out that the game was made in 2008, I knew it must be compatible with Windows 8 which was the latest Windows OS during that time. And as such it has the correct DLLs need to play the game . But my virtual machine crashed. I then simply tried running the game again on my machine and it work. You can call it luck I guess.
For whatever reason game is missing those two specific .dll files. If you have NUNS2 and 3 HD version, you may have to repeat. I haven't tested them yet. They weren't opening either. Sigh.
