Charge Buster: My problem with this one was that in order to make it more useful they made the invulnribility time of the bosses longer. Now this is not a problem if you keep using the charge shot but basic shots are kinda useless unless its someone like toadman (but it works there for different reasons). In 9 and 10 the invulnerability time is MUCH shorter meaning your basic mega buster (or even bass buster which has half the attack power) can shave off a boss's health real quick. The charge buster is useful but its not the mandatory method anymore so its not about using it all the time but more about timing it so that you would get the most out of it.
Slide: The thing about slide is that just like the charge shot in order to make it useful to the avarage gamer they made a lot of slide only parts for the stages or the bosses. In 9 and 10 however because its a secondary ability that protoman has , the levels and the bosses are designed so that basic mega can beat them AND if you are using slide , you can get some extra advantage. For example in Pump man stage , the bottom path , there are these little gaps with the bubble machines. With the slide you can just cheese there however with bass or megaman you gotta time your jumps and be careful about the bubbles since there are spikes above.
A lot of people don't like how protoman takes double dmg but considering how op he is , I don't really mind honestly. He is the agile/glass cannon of the group. Though I will say protoman is MUCH better in 10 than 9 since his shield is bigger (and is pretty op I love that thing) AND he doesnt get DOUBLE KNOCKBACK which I am not gonna lie did kill me during my 9 runs with him .
Honestly all things considered I think the characters are for the most part balanced. You would think Bass would be the most op one and for a casual run yes he is but , him not being able to move while shooting does hurt and only having treble adabtor makes it so that you have less energy to skip parts of the stages for speed running.
Proto takes double dmg but has so many ways to avoid taking a hit and easily has the most freedom when it comes to the boss order (he makes mincemeat out of blade man for example thanks to his shield) . Also he starts with proto jet which increases his freedom of the order even more (especially in 9).
Megaman while the most basic one , can have 3 pallets on the screen at a time and if you are like me and are able to shoot fast , he is the one that can dishout the most dmg by far. Also has the best shop.
I know not a lot of people are fan of it but I think they are skipping on the small details that inticreates put in while designing 9 and 10 (or any megaman game that they have made for that matter). IMO these 2 are the best designed classic games by far. I can go into more details but that would make for a long read so I will stop here.
While I do prefer having the slide I don't mind having to stick towards using the mm2 tactics. Because its solid and it returns the balance of the weapons that you have (unless it's protoman or bass though).
Seraphna which is why I aprecciate they decide to take that back and if you want to use them you have proto or bass instead of trying to force those mechanics or that you having to use them.
Yeah I will give you that 4 , for the most part , is better than the games after it. 5,6,7,8 (especially 8 with arrow shot and 5 with just the basic shot) and bass were really bad with it though.
Even the X series isn't that good with it honestly but at least x1 and 2 has that glitch which makes the basic shot useful and X4 and onwards has zero and Axl as playable characters (x8 Axl).
The Zero series is all about combos so no need to use charge there same with ZX.
But in the classic series it is a big problem since the gameplay is much more simple (which is not a bad thing some people just prefere simple). Just watch a basic megaman lets play with the charge. The players have their thumb on that fire button all the time. They only use the weapons in boss fights and then say that the weapons in megaman games are only good for boss killing.
I didn't mind having the slide removed either. It's not really needed in either game. (My first Mega Man game was Mega Man 10 so I didn't mind from to begin with.)
The slide, meanwhile, I think probably didn't need to go, and was almost certainly done in worship of MMII, which, I mean... I'm pretty ok with. It didn't need to go but I don't miss it, especially since it lives on via Protoman's more active gameplay style.
Megaman powered up (while I do love the game) has the WORST charge shot ever , another plus for 9 and 10 : The charge shot doesnt make a noise.
