UBOAT

small item
Just started, very excited about the game; when I mouse over something there is a popup, but the mouse cursor hides the text, and when I move off it disappears, so I don't know what it says in the popup.
I played a submarine game on an early console in the 80s, played through several sims since, and haven't really found the one yet, so I'll be looking closely at this one, looks great.

Welcome to the flotilla, Herr Kaleun :) Please accept this welcome package I copied and pasted from another thread:

Hover your mouse over everything!
I don't know if it was Nihilcat (lead developer/programmer) himself that did it or someone else on the dev team but someone took the time to create 'tooltips' for nearly every single UI element in the game. If it's on the UI? Chances are it has a tooltip.

So get into the habit of hovering your mouse over every piece of your UI to get familiar with it. First example? The FUEL icon at the top.

Even the detection hint icon in the lower right corner can give you a wealth of knowledge about how detectable you are to the enemy and certain buffs/debuffs such as the shadowzone, lying on the bottom or how depth charges can actually help you escape.

Are you curious about why some officers have green sailor pips and some have brown? Hover your mouse over the +/- icons in the lower left corner with an officer selected. Seriously, some crazy son of a gun at Deep Water Studios took the time to slip notes into every UI element in the game but only a very small percentage of players take advantage of this.

Playable tutorial missions
Talk to the base commander and select the dialogue option for additional training. This will open up a mission selection screen for a series of playable missions that can teach you the basics of how to play.

(IMPORTANT: Stick to the script. Do not deviate or anticipate what the tutorial wants you to do. Do only what it says, when it tells you to. The game will pause/slow down when the tutorial expects you to do something so pay close attention!)

Steam guides, YouTube and the Uboat Discord server
First place you should check out is the Steam Guides section for Uboat by clicking "Guides" up at the top of your Steam browser or just click this link here.

Next there are a great many YT videos that cover almost every aspect of the game from the basics to more advanced instructions such as how to fire your torpedoes manually.

And finally there's the official Discord server where you can ask other community members for gameplay advice, help with bugs or crashes, learn how to mod or just count rivets with other subsim nerds.🤓

A bot will message you when you join, read the instructions and be sure to visit the "opt-in" channel for additional roles and channel access.

Thanks; that's a boatload of info! It all looks quite helpful in getting started.
Still, on my screen, the cursor covers those tips, making the small ones hard to read; if the popups were made to appear on top of the cursor maybe?
Dewgle Mar 29, 2022 @ 2:04pm
That's a good suggestion and I hope the devs notice. The only solution I can offer in the meantime is to try and increase the size of your UI by using the page up / page down keys

I will try that next time. I finally figured out how to leave port, but it took an afternoon. With over 70 key controls, it's a steep learning curve.
Thanks again.

Correction: I still cannot leave port. I followed two different pages on how to leave, but there's something I'm missing. I open the telegraph, I click on the map and set the speed and nothing happens.
Dewgle Mar 30, 2022 @ 2:15pm
Did you select a mission from the base commander?
6Taylor4 Mar 30, 2022 @ 2:26pm
I'm just starting, supposed to go 2000km to an area. Is that given by the base Commander?
Dewgle Mar 30, 2022 @ 2:34pm
Normally you cannot leave port until you've accepted a mission. But if you see an objective to patrol 2,000km in an assigned grid then that means you've already accepted a mission. So that cannot be it.

When you set the speed on your telegraph is there a green light on Diesels or Electrics? And are you selecting one of the forward gears? (black).

Are there any men manning the engines?

Hi 6Taylor4,

Which mission did you choose? What exactly are your mission objectives?

There seems to be something missing on your boat so that you can leave the port.
Is there any information under the telegraph?

Cheers Ruby

So look: this is the second mission; Mission 2 12 Jan 41, THE BLACK PIT SECTOR BE1-BE4.
I completed #1, Resupply, and this is the next mission.
I thought this was a TUTORIAL, where is all the tutoring?
Where is this green light supposed to appear? you say on diesel, where's that?
I select a forward gear, in the back type on the telegraph.
I set a compass setting away from the dock. nothing
I click the map, set waypoints to that area, then nothing.
Dewgle Mar 31, 2022 @ 12:15pm
I just attempted the 2nd tutorial mission and I didn't have any problems undocking from port. See the screenshots in this gallery here[imgur.com].

They do provide tutoring but you have to be careful to not anticipate what the tutorial wants you to do and only do what the tutorial tells you when it tells you to do it.

Anticipating or jumping the gun can break the tutorials.
6Taylor4 Mar 31, 2022 @ 6:12pm
Thanks. I am not seeing any popup tutorial messages. I'll just have to start again.
