It doesn't matter. If you find yourself shooting at a plane, chances are that plane is already attacking you
You have to remember that the deck gun had zero “ fire control”, the gunner was shooting over open sights. Only warships with proper fire control gear could engage at longer ranges. Look at all the wartime photos of boats shelling merchantmen, they are at very close range. I don’t even bother using the gun until I’m below half a kilometre range, preferably closer. At least then I hit every time.
