Replacable skipper?
One thing I've only read about but never seen possible in action is that the captain, like all other officers, can be replaced. Is this so, or have I only dreamt it?

If it is possible, how do one do that?

One reason I ask is, I'm getting a bit tired of restarting a new game because my skipper insists on either being a cook, a french speaker, a diver, or a runner, for the most part. If the skipper is not replacable, then I just won't bother with those skills. If he IS replaceable, then that changes things and I can get on with the game right away with no restart.

Well, the cook perk for the captain isn't that bad at the moment. When on vacation, someone needs to look after the galley.

Nah, the galley's doing fine as it is. If they want vacation, they need to transfer to another boat.

Vacation is more than just relaxation.

So, about the question then?

Well if you wanna get rid of the captain put him right next to the net cutter and bump into a kay.
If done right he will fall of the boat and .... yesss!

So, there are no intended game mechanics for a non-violent transfer of captaincy? Looks like I'll keep restarting then. There really should be a way to promote another leader to captain.

The only way to promote someone else to captain is if your existing one dies. Otherwise there is no way.

It would add to them game if maxed out captains were taken off the boat. Some captains were promoterd to desk jobs, some were shot for not being hitler fanboys. Not many boats that saw the same captain from 39 to 45.

On the Crew Screen - there is a check mark that can be clicked to remove someone from the boat, the exception is that there is Not one by the Skipper.

I even tried removing him from the "crew.xlsx" file and naming another Leader as the Skipper, it didn't work.
Sailor = 0
Officer = 1
Skipper = 2
Even if you give another "Officer Leader" a "2" - it doesn't work.

The game will still load in the Original Skipper, it appears "Hard-coded"

I had a game where the skipper was sent as an onvoy to another uboat and even though I clicked return to boat he apparently liked that uboat better and was never seen again. When I got back to port I was unable to do anything because the actions required a skipper. Had to reload a previous save.
Apparently it was implied that the skipper is the player's alter ego and cannot be replaced. It’s bad that we can’t immediately assign him an initial skill, so as not to have to abuse with saveloading.

It would be nice to remove randomness at the start of the game.

There was no point in shooting. There is nowhere else to transfer the submariners.
And few of them were fans. The specifics of their service.

Maybe they need greater variety of traits … I find the only useful traits are English speaker or linguist and merchant

If the Skipper could be removed from the boat and a new Skipper selected, I would even argue for negative or balanced officer traits... Something like:

Easy-Going: Runs a Relaxed Boat (XP gains 5% faster for officers and crew, but Discipline declines 10% faster when losing discipline.)
