UBOAT
I need better tools to play without contacts on!
Hello,

I'm a bit more hard-core and have recently decided to play uboat without contacts on, as with the new TDC it is easier to do so for several reasons... anyway...

However, given that I have to do manual dead reckoning, it is very difficult to do so without certain tools that other games (urrg, dated SH3 with mods, urrg... what a finicky and unstable game, anyone complaining here about "instability" is wrong and hasn't played a 90s or 00s game before).

I need the following:

1) Line drawing tool that allows me to see the angle (with 0 = true north) I am drawing a line (I can figure out true course, but I can't draw it with accuracy!)

Copy line, or parallel line tool, very useful for multiple contacts.

SOMETHING WHICH TELLS ME MY TRUE COURSE. I see working compasses on the freaking boat, but I can't actually read it properly. Many a calculation relies on true course as it doesn't require conversion.... I can't believe we went out to sea without a compass.

Not "required", but helpful: a tool which allows me to set a speed and a time interval that will "notch" a line based upon target speed and distance. For example, if I set 10 minute interval, 8knts, I should see a line with notches every 1376 meters. This will save a pause to draw circles, and will make map less cluttered when course if affirmatively known.

PLEASE MAKE AN ANGLE TOOL THAT WILL SUPPLY A "TRUE ANGLE" FROM 0-360 and which doesn't "roll over" at 180. Urrg, it tickles my goat having to pause and pull out a calculator or fumble some subtraction in my head. My goat is a bit grumpy, and you don't want a grumpy goat.

To me, it appears that we have all the same map drawing tools that were available in SH3/4?

I don't recall the things you are asking for: parallel lines, copy/paste, notched lines, angles over 180°, were ever a thing in SH3/4 map drawing tools? To me, it looks like we have exactly the same drawing tools we had before. For our current line tool that provides TC, the compass is a tad large for my liking but certainly no difficulty in reading it when plotted.

As I am also a big fan of plotting my own contacts and determining things like course and speed via my own crude forms of hydrophone TMA, not sure why something like a 180°+ angle drawing tool would come into play?

I've only reloaded the game a couple days ago, but the drawing tools seem to allow accurate course line plots for both True or Relative bearings. You make me doubt myself now, will have to check again this evening, but pretty sure I was using the line compass tool last night and a left/right mouse click-n-drag was the toggle between drawing a True or Relative course. Maybe the option is not available if no ship to click on? I was only tinkering in tutorial and it seems hard to turn some stuff off, so ship images kept popping up.

I play with no contacts but I am absolutely fine without any drawing.

I like drawing on the map. Currently, the only thing I miss is being able to plot my course using waypoints. I must be missing something simple?
Fully agree with this post. These are essential tools for anyone playing without any map contacts.

Maybe pushing of shift button?
I would like to see sonar bearing lines with map contacts off, evading dd's is a nightmare with map contacts off last time I checked.

the lack of lines fits well with the no-contact realism settings, but I would like the sonarman to separate the warships from the merchants. he knows how to do this, but refuses to write about it in his contact list.
It would also be great to be able to assign him a contact, which he would monitor every minute and make a report. but I want too much :)

At this point I'm not sure if I can do it in the unstable due to issues with the mod template (trying to confirm one way or the other), but ASAP I'll be putting out a mod to add true course to distance label on the dashed course lines (likely the same code that handles it in the bearing tool). It's an extremely simple change in the code, but again, I'm not sure if it's possible in the current beta.

I'm a realism guy as well so the bearing lines to me simulate what the sonar guy would be telling the captain anyway.

I'm curious though, how do you manage to evade multiple dd's without the sonar bearing lines?

...that's what I was missing, thanks!

I have to agree with this. And the merchant\warship shout out's.
I found it too difficult as it is. A f****** nightmare on that officer rescue mission. I gave up and went back to the old map after that. that was about 8 real time hours I'll never get back.
I don't mind a bit of realism, but not all of us like challenges similar to doing a Rubik cube blindfolded.
So as to not upset the reality die hard's, I would like to see some more "options" for this part of the game.
I hate the zoom in circle of view with the clouds floating by. with the wind and waves sounds. I would even settle for the 2D map mod with the internal sub sounds.
It just feels "all or nothing" to me, as it is.

I can't believe we went out to sea without a compass.
.
Just in case you are Not aware of this feature.
When drawing a straight line from North to South on the Map,
Hold down on the mouse button and slowly move the mouse left to right or basically back and forth.
When you are pointed North the numbers will switch.
It’s sort of hard to explain, but you will understand when doing it.
Figuring out East and West from that straight line is well…straight forward.

And Yes, a submarine game without a default Compass all of these years is….

Yes, it's possible without the mod template.

Simple version: You need to set up the folder structure like mods need and can then place a code file with custom code (using harmony functions). The game creates a dll on the fly. Voilà. Maybe you use a code only mod from the existing mods available at the workshop as a sample and then just edit the code file to your needs :)
