Help with U4 Spy mission - Not enough fuel

I completed the mission to drop the spy off in Ireland, managed my fuel as best I could, using electric and diesel engines only at reduced speed. However I won;t have enough fuel to return to port as ordered. I also can't get a resupply.... HELP !

I've done this mission successfully in the IID, I don't think it's possible with the IIA.

Well, basically you cannot really go beyond anything like scapa flow or the english channel with a IIA. It's simply beyond their area of operation. You'd need a IID at least for those kind of missions.
Maybe you could do it with 100% fuel economy and lowest speed, but that's a bit silly overall.

I did it in 2A. Still in it BTW. Went out over scotland at lowest speed, avoiding all tempting targets. Nav and engines with 4 green bars. Just ratings as lookout. Running surfaced only except for hourly scan of the hydrophone to avoid any ships.
Don't run on electric since it will use a lot of fuel to recharge. Stop all consumers.
Way back from the spy drop off was planned to be same return voyage but the destroyer screens became too much. They kept scanning my path until I decided to turn back and go through the channel. I saved and tried for Vigo first but no dock loads there so no refuelling possible. Reloading and sailing home to Wilhelmshaven. Not possible to refuel at the island there either since the mission marker is at the home port. I arrived with 4% fuel and on electrics the final turn around the cape into port.

It seems like the devs still need to add some gating on the randomness of content. While patrolling the North Sea on the type IIA I once received a new mission to go check out Liverpool. I had to load an earlier save and hope I don't get the same new request.

But, for the spy missions, my limited experience is actually better. I received the spy mission for the NW Scotland while on the IIA, and that was quite doable. Then I upgraded to the next sub type (is it a IIB or IID, not sure) and as soon as I did that I received a spy mission for Iceland. So it feels like progression is kinda working, but still there might be some weird requests from time to time.

Is there a mod or something that I can use. Don't want to have to re do the campaign, took hours , a mod to either unlock refeulling or improve the consumstion so I can make it home

I did it in the IIA. Run off the electric engines, only use diesel to recharge. I think I ran on low speed only as well. Fully staffed engines and nav too
edit: getting back to port I was completely out of fuel and had about half a charge in the batteries, so I barely made it

I run on Electric all the time can Double if not Triple your Range--just recharge in a slower speed 1or2 then go Full-not Flank on Electric.

The calculated range during charging is shortened by half or even more so I assumed I would burn too much diesel while moving and charging. Perhaps lying in Laden mode is more efficient?
