I think this is the only way and it's a bit of a pain to have to be at alarm to do it, it should be a function in the crew controls like "change the lights" or "turn on the pumps" etc.
Yep this is the only way to remove the prompt.
That said the prompt is more a loose suggestion, rather than a indication that there is any actual damage to find.
Also assigning crew to a engineer stationed to perform the inspection seems the only way to actually get the job done, just leaving a engineer set to the position but with no crew will lead to no inspection actually being done, which has always struck me as a bit weird.
Why you can have 2-3 engineers stationed at a command station to oversee damage control, but not a single one can inspect the boat for actual damage unless they have some underlings assigned to them feels a bit off to me.
Rather than right clicking, changing boat or any of that you can just switch your alarm state on, set a engineer to damage control station and assign them at least 1 crewman. Progress time by 12x and it should be resolved after a few seconds at most.
You just need to make sure your engineer has at least 1 crewman assigned to them, otherwise they'll however be inspecting the boat and getting nothing actually done.
I guess the idea is that your engineer is 'overseeing the inspection' rather than actually doing any inspection themselves, so if they don't have any crewman assigned to them they're shouting at imaginary people to inspect the boat and waiting forever to hear back from those imaginary people.
