Point to sinking warships?
I sank the battleship Rodney and saw that I got a huge boost to the calculus for getting medals (and didn't count toward war tonnage at all as far as I can see). But do medals do anything as far as game systems go? Are warships really just to be ignored/avoided?

That's my feeling as well.

Warships only give medal points and medals themself are just an ego boost and good to speed up the progress to get the achievement with the knights cross.

Historically, the absolute first priority for U-Boot captains was to sink merchant shipping. Attacking destroyers and corvettes usually happened in self defense, even in the Happy Times period. But also historically, warship tonnage was accounted for U-Boot's sunk tonnage. I think an escort carrier, battleship or even a cruiser would be hard to ignore, those would be targets worth the risk of losing the boat, looking from the perspective of the commander, as it makes sense for the strategy of a naval war.

I also have a feeling that big warships are not properly rewarded, progress towards medals is simply useless now. Especially as now even my radioman got the Knight's Cross for saving the lives of sailors injured by depth charges dropped during air raids on my home ports - another unbalanced thing.

Is there any in game benefit to having the knights cross? Or it's just the achievement? I'm not big into achievements haha..

Achievement only, if you're not deep into roleplay.

For the campaigns like tonnage war, happy days, black pit and so on it clearly says merchant tonnage. But Sinking an enemy capital ship is huge moral and propaganda achievement and it's also a huge loss to the enemy navy if you consider how expensive those ships were and how long it took to build them.

Yes it is. And that's why rewards for sinking warships should be reworked. I think warship tonnage from destroyers and corvettes shouldn't count for mission goals, cruisers, battleship and carriers should. And all sunk warships should account to campaign tonnage, this could balance things a bit.

If warships counted to most campaign goals, then campaigns would become so pointlessly easy and quick to complete that they might as well just not bother to exist.

There's really no reason to change the campaigns from how they are currently, as most of the campaigns I've come across when it comes to targeting ships and sinking tonnages are all specifically about crippling the British trade routes and starving the island by blocking their imports..... sinking warships doesn't achievement that goal..... if anything it could be seen as counter-progress to the objective, as every torpedo and boat wasted on taking a warship out of operation is another British cargo ship left unhindered.

I feel having things as they are currently with medal progression being the primary motivator for taking on warships but at the cost of slower campaign progress is a pretty good balance. Especially considering the point cost of some of the later more elaborate Knights Cross medals that require 1000+ points.

I agree, I think the warships should at least count towards reputation points. I mean sure it's not merchant tonnage and shouldn't count towards that objective, but I would think the captain that sunk a battle ship would get a good reputation with the admiralty.

The problem here is there is no defined pool of ships. So sinking warships do not remove them or reduce them in any way. And unlike merchant ships were those more limited. There is also no other reward with it besides some standard ship point bonus unless you hit an escort carrier for example and you get a little more. You do not get extra bonus as you do for merchant ships.

When you get into the game its unfortunately very hollow. Realism of the uboot is good, but after that there is nothing. You also have the issue of speedboat type of issues with certain destroyers in particular.

So take the game as it is, an arcade merchant sinking one where warships are just some annoyances to avoid.

Even for medals, the warships are not worth it.

They don't count toward tonnage but do count toward Reputation point gain and "income".

There is no reputation gain and no income. Only merchants give income, 200 for a sink.

You gain income every time you report a spotted ship/ship sunk. You gain a BONUS 200 for merchants.

OK true, but still, merchant ships give way better. And there is still no reputation.
VipreRX Aug 18, 2024 @ 1:54pm
Don't points toward medals also give points toward rep?
