Ship spawns

Just completed laying mines and I had all these ships suddenly spawn in and follow the same weird patrol. Some of them turned around and went the wrong way, and a few of them just ran into each other. I had to wait an hour for them all to pass by before attempting to leave. Anyone else experience something similar?

I've seen that kind of thing a couple of times. Maybe it's the British version of the Philadelphia Experiment, although I have no idea what part of England is most like Philly. Wensleydale, I guess, on account of the cheese.
