Also, there’s a ”leave port” teleport button when you first approach the canal doors. You don’t need to navigate the canal manually
Also, try a slower gear if you plan to go through small spaces
Do not station yourself in Kiel.
I've only travelled through it 5 times, but each time I've just set autocourse to a point on the other side beyond the canal and my IIA at the time navigated it fine.
Wonder what is causing people to have different experiences, unless they're doing something like auto-plotting part of the route along the canal, then auto-plotting another point of the canal and so forth.
And then I can understand why they'd have problems as they're telling the game to plot between their last end point and a new start point, and if they set those in weird problematic points the game will just follow the players instructions as best as it's able to, as the player has explicitly stated they want to go to very specific points along the canal regardless to turning angles and speed involved to achieve it.
What boat are you finding it having a problem in?
With the Type IIa and IId I found the auto-navigation had no problems plotting routes anywhere, as long as I set the proper destination points at the end of such trails, and didn't try to "Fix the system" by setting multiple different points along the canal or other small narrow straits.... If I wanted to go through the Kiel Canal I'd just set a destination point beyond the other side of the canal and let the auto-route do it's thing, which it always did fine.
However with the VIIb, I'm starting to notice that the auto-route plotting isn't really able to wrap its head around the much wider turn angles of that boat due to it not being as nimble to turn as the type IIa/d.
If I'm wanting to do gradual angle adjustments over a distance of 1km or so, the auto-route plotting is fine, but once I start wanting more sharper turns across a shorter distance, the auto-route planned out just isn't able to wrap its head around the reality of how the VIIb will actually turn, and instead will just lay down a point that it will never be able to meet, causing my boat to start doing wider circles regardless to what might actually be in the way in its attempt to try to reach the actual destination point set out.
