I also just got it but didn`t use it yet.

I think you can order it to meet with you somewhere outta there via radio. Ees, gas etc... "Nachschub anfordern" in the german version.

Full assumption.

Milk cow is a HQ project. Find the symbol on the map, should be in northwest Atlantic. Click it and assign an officer and set the new grid, choose accept. Takes 12 days. Got mine from Black Pit.

My first time was a Southern Routes patrol and I shifted the Type XIV to grid DF9. Next one was the Labrador weather station so changed it to BD1.

In the second one it was kind of bugged. Set the officer, but when I went to set the new grid the interface went away. Tried that several times, same result, even trying different officers and grid squares.

If that happens, hold left mouse when setting the grid, which leaves the interface open to assign the officer and accept.

Milk cow works like quartermaster in port. You can take on up to four torpedoes, sell and buy food and items, refuel and offload prisoners.

To find it at sea, use the radio to call for a resupply when near the grid. Call again when in the grid to receive exact coordinates.

This is a great feature, and having some player control over the location is a good design decision.

The first radio message is only needed if you don't know or remember where the boat is, but since you will place it, that should be rarely needed and you only need to send the message once you are in the correct grid to get he exact position.

Last post since the OP has not responded.

I've now had the milk cow for a number of patrols, and it all works splendidly. You can initiate a HQ project at any time, even a sea, so can shift the milk cow around at any time, but it still takes twelve days.

Since we have been mostly hunting in the North Atlantic along the convoy routes, I've kept it at first in BD1, and later shifted it three squares east and two squares south in to BD9 so it's a little closer to the hunting grounds. We can top off, rearm and resupply food, sonar decoys and so on whenever needed. Full fuel means no need to conserve, and leaves us free to chase any contact at any speed. Which is good, because as the war moves on the ships out here have gotten bigger and faster. We intercepted one American C3 clipping along at the astonishing speed of 15 knots. This burns fuel.

I had read a post somewhere that milk cows are vulnerable and can be sunk. So I make sure to keep it tucked away just off the main routes. Not sure if this is true, but adds an interesting facet to the whole affair, ensuring its safety (even if it is actually invulnerable)

You are correct about MC vulnerability. There were only a limited number of the Cows. The RN, using Enigma code breakers to track the Cow’s locations, made them very-high category targets and I believe all, or just about all, were sunk fairly quickly.

She is not invulnerable, they can be sunk. I lost two cows only because they were in neighboring squares and when I called one, for some reason the second one came. And when I decided to move one of them further away, it was sunk on the way by enemies convoy. And the other cow also disappeared along with this.

Good to know. I've kept my cows tucked in close to the hunting grounds, but a little off the beaten track and so far all have survived. We are now in June of 1944 and have three arrayed in an arc. One south of Iceland, one north of the Azores and one south of the Azores. They have been very useful. I hit one just about every patrol to top off and replenish fish and food.
