Usually shoot on 3m of depth for the tops and sling them from afar.
Do you have a screen shot or some video to see what is wrong? Or potentially improved?
Although, I'm stuck in scapa too currently.
Royal Oak is on the sea bed already but no chance to get away from those pesky destroyers no matter what I try.
I played that mission countless times, something definitely changed.
lol even if i take it out im unable to escape destroyers and water is not deep
In the release version I did the entire thing on the surface and saw one warship (other than 'Royal Oak' and a jeep carrier moored just beyond). Slipped past that destroyer at the eastern exit and made our escape at full beans.
Super lucky, but this cannot happen only for me. Someone else will get the same perfect setup.
FWIW between the two attempts the location of 'Royal Oak' was different. First one more to the east, second one more to the north of the anchorage.
Not sure how well the armor is simulated, but that would hit her right at her belt armor. Setting them deeper to 6 or 7 meters might yield better results.
I had the same setup, but I'm only playing on medium difficulty to begin with, since it is my first career. So maybe that plays a part, but I got never even hunted at all.
Also, you might already have a ship engineer who can give some extra % to torpedo damage.
i usually snipe it from 5km+ , shooting on bearing since speed 0 and then sitting on the sea bed. blue , silence.
The destroyers usually calm down before i run out of oxygen.
and weather is too foggy, attacking from far distances seems not possible
2. Hit ship with torpedoes.
3. Reload if no luck.
Don't use TC when torpedoes are about to hit.
Spread them out over the full length of the ship, depth around 7m, I think.
Then full silent running, put my sub on the seabed and waited for the DDs to calm down before sneaking out the way I came in. Had to surface once because I got stuck in a net...
but same thing should apply.. you can shoot at either.
Sometimes the ship fights against the currents/water motion and the slight chances in relative bearing can make huge shifts 5-6km away.
Make sure you are as deep as possible while still being able to shoot.
Otherwise is just heat up the torps and send them.

IRL the battleship HMS Royal Oak shipwreck lies upside down where she was torpedoed in water 100 feet (30 meters) deep. The highest point of the ship is 16 feet (5 meters) below the surface of Scapa Flow.
In-game Scapa Flow is so shallow that when you "sink" the Royal Oak the waterline doesn't even reach the deck.
