Cannot see ships on map. What am i doing wrong?

Ive looked up several tutorials on youtube and all of them just show the ships on the map when you are setting up an attack.

Im setting up an attack on a convoy, i can see the ships on the combat scope. Locked them. Worked out their speed....... but cannot work out their distance and angle as i cannot see any ships on the map. I Rammed the ship and i still cannot see it on the map???? Tried going to 50M periscope depth and fully surfaced. How do i get ships to show on map?

When you start your game, did you select with map contacts visualization? Check in settings>gameplay if you're not sure. It's called "Contacts mode".
