It there a way to lower the periscope?
I know they didn't just leave it extended all of the time,

When you have an officer at any of the two periscopes you can select him and in the upper left corner you should get the option to raise/lower them.

NO idea..

I caught my crew members, pretending to work.. manning the periscopes while being in deep waters..

Perhaps they are trying to spot mines? hehe.

The main reason I remove the periscope from my crewman tasks.

That and when I am submerged and wanting to have as low a silhouette as possible the last thing I really want is to find some crewman left the periscope up during a brief spark of curiosity.

THank you sir, I'm trying to sneak past a fleet of destroyers after laying mines and the waters only 20m deep, And I literally have to go underneath ships to escape

Once you have one of your officers man the observation periscope and you click the button to keep it lowered, you can remove the officer to another duty and crewman won't man the periscope.

Does the crew using the periscope actually affect anything regarding detection? I thought for a while it didn't, but I've been out of the loop for probably a year waiting for the full build and am just getting back into it.

You can map keys to raise/lower scope, it is blank by default.

Yeah it does.

State of the periscope is factored into things like visibility detection chance. If you hover over the detection icon to see what's contributing what, you'll see if someone jumps on the periscope and raises it that your chances of being detected visually go up a little.

if you want the observation periscope to avoid being used by sailors, you need to remove it from the crew abilities.
