To this day, I can only get my Second in command to get a reading. I'll send the Captain to get one, he'll walk up to it, then walk away and not give a reading. Every time.

That's true, getting others to use it is a pain! I play in skipper mode and tend to do it myself, and only then realised its fully modelled with different modes and you can even leave it on in shallow mode, which cannot be detected and see the depth just by glancing at it as you walk past.

You can set it to shallow, so that the inner circle has a light indicating the depth up to 120m, after that you need to toggle the switch, then the larger circle will have a light indicating the depth from 120m or deeper.

The other option is a ping, the light spins around at high speed and you hold the button, the location of the light when the ping sounds is the depth. This one is harder to use and can be detected.

Its pretty in-depth! (no pun intended).

According to my ex it works better than i did.

In all seriousness tho; more to it than that.

The only thing of interest to me about the echo-sounder would be to have a more efficient way to monitor it in terms of locating a thermal layer.

Otherwise, I mouse-over the map and it gives me the depth. On a side note; that abysmal map! A map with blue-shaded bathymetry info would be far more useful. I rather hate the dark, brown, tilt-skewed thing we are forced to look at and draw on. Can I assign a crew member to my nav officer to stand there and hold a flashlight please?

Ok, thx. :)

Also, i have noticed that you won't actually be detected when using the real pinging
