I'm gonna run deep now to avoid the barrage of thread depth charging this is going to endure.
So anyway, is it a good submarine game that brings you that commanding a WW2 German sub feeling? Yes, definitely. Is it more modern than SH3? Of course it is. Would I recommend it? Sure. Does it take some getting used to for someone who is an SH3 vet? Yes, I think so. But that can be rewarding. It can be customized in many ways. Last but not least, there are mods out for it as well, just have to check whether or not they work with the full release that is out now and getting updates.
Is it better than SH3 with GWX? That is up to you to decide.
Modded to vanilla is not a fair comparison either, considering the Uboat modding template isn't quite fixed yet, and therefore the vast majority of legacy mods can't be updated for full release yet.
$10 this is gonna get overrun by the "This game isn't Silent Hunter, therefore it's garbage" crowd.
Well, who knows.
Uboat has developers and modders, so it is and it will be an evolving creature for the better. SH is a dead project wich reached its limit long ago.
I have asked my IA about wich game is better and she told me that:
Which is better?
"Both games have their own strengths, and the choice between Uboat and Silent Hunter 3 will depend on individual preferences:
Uboat might be more attractive to those seeking a modern experience, with an emphasis on crew management and narrative elements, along with realism options that can adapt to various play styles.
Silent Hunter 3 remains a classic in the submarine simulation genre, ideal for players who prefer classic gameplay, greater simplicity in management, and an established community with numerous mods.
Both games offer unique and satisfying experiences, so the best approach is to try both and see which one best fits your play style."
I never played a fully modded out Silent Hunter 3, it was always stock back in the day, and I am enjoying UBOAT more. There just feels like there is much more depth to the game overall and many more ways to play it. It can be a super casual "shot torps at ships" game, a crew management game where you supervise all of them doing the work, or you can jump right in and twist all the knobs/buttons yourself. Silent Hunter 3 tried some of this but didn't do it as well in hindsight.
SH3 was the best we had at the time and UBOAT just improves on it in every way.
Plus the devs for UBOAT seem to be onboard with modding so this game can really go places in the next few years.
But thank you for the answers, I will pass it on to my father, maybe I will buy it for him and he will test it out.
but I have to say this game does it all for me. I no longer have to install a huge list of mods and hope they work... tweaking, etc.. just to get it working.
This game (right out of the box) is incredible (imho), the graphics are great, the gameplay is great, the mechanics are great. The flexibility of being able to play casual all the way to pretty serious is amazing to me.
I guess I'm saying yes, it is better of course, in just my opinion.
I felt a little sad but have removed all of my SH series now..
This game has just brought it all too far for me to go back.
Buy the game for your dad as a present that is the best you can do
