Wolfpack action and BdU coordination?
I'm fairly early in the campaign in 1939/40 but the mission briefing officer has mentioned wolfpack action as a strategy to take on large convoys.

So I'm wondering, how does it work? I often see allied U-Boats call out targets and send a bearing signal. More often than not the bearing signal goes silent not long after and If I go that direction there's either no trace of the friendly uboat or no trace of anything at all.

I can report funnel smoke and cash in some money but is there any benefit beyond that for doing this? I kind of always hope for a message from BdU saying "Shadow your current contacts and enable bearing signal for friendly uboats in the area to converge on your position" but it hasn't happened so far.

If that is at all possible, how do the battles play out? Can uboats coordinate attacks? Does everyone just do their own thing and sink whatever they can once the attack is commenced?

Sometimes a random uboat will order all nearby uboats to gather at one sector where a convoy will pass. When you go there early, you have the option to skip time to when the convoy arrives. Then you can command all the friendly ubots that show up. You can even hold the alt key to find them if they fall outside your detection range

The random radio reports are not a wolfpack report. They’re just telling you that there is a ship/convoy at that moment if you want to chase them
I only once received a message about a wolf pack forming, but immediately after that an order came in to rendezvous with a Japanese boat. I couldn’t even find out what it was there, I had to go meet the Japanese.
